The trio were the only people in their high school who listened to punk garage rock and independent music so they eventually gravitated toward each other. After falling out with the Conners before either completed school. By that point Van had a band with a singer named Mark Pickerel; the pair had recently kicked Lee Conner out of the band so they invited.

“Reading those books at age 15 is mind-blowing. You’re sitting here reading the book it’s a great story it’s reallycool – then you start to draw parallels to the real world and realizethese authors are talking about the world they were living in and theworld I’m living in. Mixed in with the punk he was listening to from Minor Threat BlackFlag and the Dead Kennedys “it had a profound impact on me” he says. “(The music was) something so different really challenging the ideasof what music is what it should be what purpose it should serve. The other members of Rise Against – including drummer BrandonBarnes who hails from Evergreen and was in Pinhead Circus – shared hislove for learning as well as a love for melody. Rise Against ishard-core but its guitars and vocals never lose a sense of melodyabove Barnes’ ferocious drumming. “We love hard-core we love all the heavy stuff out there butpersonally we all need a little bit of melody to make our love for themusic endure” McIlrath says.

“And it comes to the point where it’s just not interesting anymore. I still like that kind of music but I think I’ve done enough of screaming and jumping around for one lifetime on the stage. “ver here there’s a strong tradition of folk music and punk rock being very close to each other with artists like Billy Bragg. And from that point of view I still like to consider what I’m doing now as being punk in the sense that I do it myself and I’m independent.
