… Tour ‘06; AFI Draw Biggest Crowd – News Story | Music…

summer festival touched down at the Riverbend Music Center on Wednesday it served up 36 flavors — approximately 30 of which were variations of the punk taste of the past few years: emo. With few exceptions angsty tattooed white boys with a lot to scream about ruled the day for the 11000-plus fans who wandered among the eight stages and endless collection of band merch and sponsor booths. The exceptions were goth punks AFI who drew the day’s biggest crowd with their dramatic dinnertime set and old-schooler Joan Jett who provided one of the few true cross-generational bonding moments for the many families in attendance. (Click for photos from the Cincinnati stop on this year’s Warped Tour. )Unlike last year when breaking bands like My Chemical Romance Fall ut Boy and Avenged Sevenfold drew big crowds and lots of hype (see. Still he said Warped ‘06 is on track to an expected total draw of approximately 600000… The only hip-hop act on the bill Gym Class Heroes moved the crowd with a combination of live instruments and the head-bobbing ode to MySpace addiction “New Friend Request. Then there were political rockers Anti-Flag who staged a fist-pumping mini-rally against oppressive governments sexism and lots of other isms through subtle message songs like “F— Police Brutality. ” Sets by Saves the Day and Motion City Soundtrack had a more pop-punk feel with plenty of chant-along choruses and a lighter touch than some of the day’s more tortured acts. Sweden’s the Sounds — one of the few female-fronted acts — brought a bit of class to the proceedings thanks to singer Maja Ivarsson’s black heels and clingy cocktail dress. The formal wear was just a front for an unhinged stage persona that paid serious homage to late punk priestess Wendy. Williams of the Plasmatics right down to the partly shorn blond hairdo and a few unladylike glimpses of her panties during some deep knee bends. As a bonus the Sounds were one of the few bands at Warped to bust out the cowbell which they did proudly during the catchy “Song With a Mission.

I jumped on the Mets and Blue Jays bandwagons when they were hot. My favorite player was Mark McGwire (same name you know and similar body type). cstilwell: What type of music do you like to listen to the most and who are some of your favorite musicians? Teahen: I grew up listening to punk music but as I mellow with age I’ve started to embrace James Taylor Jack Johnson Matt Costa (no relation to Shane Costa). dc43: Are there any particular Kansas City players who have been mentors for you? What players are the strongest leaders in the clubhouse? Teahen: Joe McEwing was one of my favorite players and mentors last year. He really helped me get through my rookie year as well as Tony Graffanino. This year I’ve learned a lot from Grud (Mark Grudzielanek) Reggie Sanders and of course Mike Sweeney. ba2929: What goes through your head when you’re facing a closer that throws high 90’s? Teahen: See it and hit it! Base_Ball: How much credit do you take for the Royals’ improved play over the last couple months? Seems to me you’re return from Triple-A and David DeJesus from injury have been the two biggest reasons for the turnaround.

"Is there something that’s really above and beyond vital now to get knowledge of as a musician? "I could say music theory but that’s putting it into almost too-structured of a form but the idea of learning being able to communicate with other musicians and to know how to express yourself and to play that expression in any style. You fake it for a while and then sooner or later you’re actually doing it. "Time is always the thing you have to spend with whatever you choose whether it’s punk music or acting ultimately you have to spend time on it and then it just becomes your second language like dreams or something. "What is the paradigm of modern guitar? "I think it’s just as wide-open as everything else. I haven’t been paying attention to guitarists in particular. In the late 80s early 90s I went through a phase of listening to a lot of guitar-centric music but I found for my own sake I have to listen to anything that moves me attracts my feelings. What I get a kick out of recently is so not technically oriented but like John Lee Hooker – just how much feeling he can put into an 8-minute one-chord jam.
