And this week a few more veteran punk bands are coming to New York. n Thursday RANCID — the long-running sequel to the short-lived late-1980s band PERATIN IVY — begins a four-night stand at the B. King Blues Club and Grill. Since the early 1990s Rancid has been bashing out beery sing-along punk songs sometimes leavened with ska or reggae… Thursdays opening act is H2 the band led by Toby Morse a former roadie for the influential New York hardcore band Sick of It All. Fridays opening act is THE AND THE SKYSCRAPERS the latest project of the indefatigable former lead singer of the Lunachicks a ubiquitous downtown punk band of the 90s. n Saturday its the LRDZ (formerly the Lordz of Brooklyn) one of a handful of punkish New York bands whose music prefigured the rock-rap boom of the late 90s. And on Sunday its another punk-rock rapper (though he prefers the term thugcore) DANNY DIABL formerly of Crown of Thornz and Skarhead. 243 West 42nd Street Manhattan; sold out.

“Have you got waterproofs?” he asks. “It’s about an hour’s walk. ” I was lucky enough to be invited onto the judging panel last year for the inaugural PRS Foundation New Music Award. Finer a former member of the folk-punk band the Pogues was already familiar from his Longplayer project a 1000- year piece of music that rearranges itself via computer software in Trinity Buoy Wharf Lighthouse Docklands. His new proposal included a crudely sketched drawing of water dripping down a shaft hitting pivoted resonating bowls and sending notes up into the ether through a giant brass horn. ne proposed site was a remote disused Staffordshire mine shaft and there was something attractive about the idea of an abandoned industrial space being adapted in this way. Though he provided little scientific supporting evidence Finer had thoughtfully sketched tiny notes emerging from the horn so we knew the design would work.

At first they came of as a Sublime knock-off cover band only they didn’t know it. Skipping from lighting fast punk riffs to catchy reggae rhythms in a heartbeat folks we’re skeptical of their originality. But regardless of the ground they’ve broken (or the lack there of) they’re a high-energy group that’s a blast to watch perform. Closing their set with a cover of Rage against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade” was more than enough to satisfy the audience.

fm takes musical choice to an unparalleled level albeit in audio. Simply enter the name of an artist you want — from Arctic Monkeys to Frank Zappa — and you can hear them within seconds. Alternatively the ingenious service will scan your music collection and like a personal DJ tailor a playlist by matching your tastes with those of like-minded members. Yet multitasking is hard-wired into their brains and effected through a host of digital devices and dizzying web services… Who says mobile phones are destroying the art of conversation?ENTERTAINMENT N THE MVETo the networked young the mobile phone is a social nexus identity badge and entertainment device all rolled into one snazzy fuchsia-trimmed case. When they’re not using it for texting or snapping one another connected youth are bagging a new Diddy ring tone from Jamster. Among this tribe one of the most popular handsets is the Motorola L6 probably the cheapest mobile with Bluetooth — essential for swapping clips and pics without paying.
John tway: The world is not enough

Because that was what I’d been doing for years. Suddenly I fitted in. The trouble was that eventually even the punks learnt how to play. “John tway’s curious mixture of wit poetry and acrobatics was never well-suited to the rigid categorisation that colours the thinking of major British labels. Had tway been born in France as Jonathan Rendall observed in this newspaper some years ago he would never have had to work at being a legend. (omega)It’s patently absurd I suggest to the singer to judge his career by counting the hit singles he’s had. By that criterion Randy Newman and Little Richard are failures as well… In the meantime I’ve had the chance to talk to Chris France who has brokered most of the artist’s successful ventures. France who spoke to me from his villa in Cannes began by promoting bands such as the Clash and made his fortune during the dance-remix boom of the mid- 1980s. He established the Music of Life company which has released the work of such varied artists as Norman Cook British rapper Derek B and Rolf Harris. “I was recruited to the World Tour project earlier this year” says France. “Reserving an airliner involves advance payments in excess of £100000. Several of us are in this to the tune of five figures. We do have to sell the remaining tickets to break even but I have absolutely no doubt that we will.

” r as Chase puts it when he can be roused to speak: “Energy at its peak that’s how we played in those days. You just went for it in the most extreme way possible. Really rough punk feeling fast-forward. “The tour for Fever to Tell was so fast-forward that at the end of it Karen escaped from New York to Los Angeles. She now lives in a converted nunnery in the hipster hang-out Silver Lake does yoga drinks smelly teas gets tour-fit by power-walking in the LA hills and spends time conceptualising her stagewear with her longtime collaborator the fashion designer Christian Joy. Moving to LA “was just about getting reacquainted with myself. Being away from all my friends and family was a perfect opportunity to do some really hard work on getting to know myself again”… “Spike wanted to use this song and he couldn’t get clearance on it so he asked me and Sam if we could do something. I love stuff like that – my creative background is film and music together. “There are rumours that Sam Spiegel has produced Karen’s solo album although she blushingly declines to talk about that. She won’t even confirm a solo album exists. Perhaps she’s got enough on her plate. Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be on tour for much of this year.
