Don’t expect less from Low when they turn up the amps
New York Press – Aug 23, 2006
As quiet as possible the lowered volume served as an unspoken “screw you” a punk rock move from a group whose connection to punk wasn’t as much sonic as it was implied—neatly stowed away in their ethos. The quiet slow-going approach Alan Sparhawk and original Low bassist John Nichols adopted early on was a reaction—in the same way punk rock commented on the tired tropes of bloated ’70s rock bands. Low’s halcyon plods commented on the trappings of super-raucous punk: You keep playing your music loud and fast and we’ll play our songs soft and slow thank you. Unfortunately the stillness of their sound landed Low one of cheesiest tags in rock: slowcore. At worst the label mocked the band’s intelligence. At best it sounded totally stupid.
