But in London fashion scenesters are turning the trend on its head nurturing music labels under their fashion umbrellas. By weaving the two worlds together musicians get exposure to fashion’s tastemakers and the apparel brands can tap into the underground word-of-mouth exposure that musicians generate through live performances and the Web. “It’s a very English approach-people have to sniff around to find out that the fashion and music label are connected” says Rupert Meaker of Buddhist Punk the ready-to-wear brand that quietly launched its own record label last year. Fellow rtw label PPQ entered the music business in similarly low-key style. “It was never a conscious decision to start the music label more of a natural progression” says Percy Parker who is half of the design team behind PPQ and directs the brand’s record label 1234. “PPQ started out as a collective of people operating in music and art and experimenting in fashion. ” Buddhist Punk’s music venture came about when Tracey Bennet and Alfe Hollingsworth sold their London Records label a division of Warner.

that’s one of the biggest compliments I have got so far. ” Securing her first film role in the year after she graduated from NIDA McLeavy was happy to play someone so removed from herself. To become rock chick Jacq McLeavy lopped her long blonde hair and learned to "appreciate” punk music. Like her co-stars and first-time director Daniel Lapaine McLeavy was keen to be part of "uplifting” 48 Shades. "It’s really heart-warming and hilarious” says McLeavy. "That transition between adolescence and adulthood is really quite hilarious. ” Lapaine an Australian actor (Muriel’s Wedding ) based in London always knew he would return home to make his directorial debut.
Metal punk and rock Tool makes great noise
Rocky Mountain News – Aug 31, 2006
inline –>Perhaps the most fascinating and refreshing thing about Tool is thatthey’re making music in a way that the record industry doesn’t think ispossible anymore. Mixing metal punk and shades of progressive rock the band is madeup of three musical virtuosos (with drummer Danny Carey being perhapsone of the best double-kick- drum users of all time) backing a greatsinger in Maynard James Keenan. Like the great bands each player is able to make a great noisewithout overplaying; instead they lithely work around each other whilemaking a sound that could be used for demolition. They take years between albums and tours and make records – like themost recent one 10000 Days – that don’t have anythingresembling hit singles. Instead songs meander and develop takingtheir time to get to their point most times without anythingresembling a radio-friendly hook. nstage they’re not afraid of doing anything from bullhorn vocals (abit of a cliché you’ve got to admit) to wah-wah bass solos.

Gimme moreJudging by the sad but predictable negative crowd reaction when the Skyblast-featured band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes nailed their awesome upbeat rendition of “Sweet Caroline” I am sure that the Bucs will get lots of negative feedback about their choice for Skyblast music. So I am writing to make sure the Pirates hear my loud “THANK YU!” I am a full season ticket holder who all year long year after year has to sit through the same old country classic rock and pop baloney at Bucs’ games and it is nice for a change to have a breath of fresh air like the Gimme Gimmes (who by the way are fronted by Pittsburgh native Spike). Their tongue-in-cheek punk takes on the greatest hits of all genres was a perfect complement to the laser and fireworks show and Bucco video vignettes. But of course here in provincial Pittsburgh unless a song is sung the exact same way for 30 years on five different radio stations is a wedding standard group dance or is background music for a video repeatedly showing a squirrel on water skis it is not worthy of the masses. Kudos to the Pirates for giving the rest of us who are willing to consider a new song every decade or so a rare opportunity to see this great cover band live. Bob LucasUpper St. ClairWorse than Nickelback? The Pirates have sunk to a new low… Unfortunately for those in attendance the Skyblast show was plagued by the atrocious tones of a punk rock band that may sound all right in a club on Carson Street but actually sounded like my crazy neighbor named Larry who likes to sing in the shower to Elton John. The crowd responded to the sounds with corresponding boos and I even heard one person exclaim “You are worse than Nickelback!” This brought me to the realization that Skyblast was like a Trojan horse: it lures you in and then attacks you from the inside. This poor collaboration of music created quite an exodus. lder patrons shook their heads and quickly gathered their things to exit the stadium while children looked at their parents and cried “What is that sound Mommy?” The parents should have responded: “Honey that is the sound of desperation. Let us examine the evolution of “Skyblast. ” The Pirates originally had one Skyblast night. That quickly expanded to two and now they have three nights of fireworks pathetic music and sellout crowds.
