Tong is the latest in a series of drummers who have been taken to hospital after suffering from health problems which have a tendency to affect rock and pop drummers more than other musicians often because of the sheer physical demands on the job. There is no suggestion of drink or drugs being involved with Tong’s condition but his drumming style has been described as “very physical” and “quite mad” firmly classing him in a tradition of drummers such as Moon of and Bonham both of whom succumbed to drink and drugs problems. As a result of his illness Bloc Party whose music is described as “post-punk revival” have been forced to cancel a number of forthcoming shows including two sold-out dates at New York’s Madison Square Garden next week. They were only three dates into the four-week tour and it remains uncertain whether they will be able to complete it. A spokeswoman for the band said Tong may have suffered the injury while drumming. “Matt is known for his energetic drumming style” she said. “He can be quite mad.

More than a decade after the band stopped challenging themselves and audiences the music now feels canned and a little stale. Despite attempts to infuse some punk and classic rock into the show the Goos delivered a hit parade that plucked every popular song from their catalogue and offered it up live without so much as a chord change except for the tuning malfunction on “Name” which was interrupted so frontman John Rzeznik could adjust his guitar. Yet the crowd was thoroughly entertained and loyal to the end exploding after the singles clamouring to reach past other fans to shake Rzeznik’s hand and singing their hearts out especially when Rzeznik extended the mic their way. From the moment Rzeznik took the stage in a sleeveless shirt cargo pants and tuque the female contingent showed their appreciation. It mattered not that he was more than twice their age. “I think the last time we were in Regina was in ’88″ he said.

"The Format’s singer Nate Ruess agreed that the show will definitely have energy. "[The show] sort of has its moments of ups and downs but it is primarily upbeat" he said. Vasoli said he thinks diversity is the key ingredient to a good show and tonight’s show will not only incorporate different musical sounds but will also fuse elements of indie hip hop and pop punk. "Between us and Gym Class Heroes it is a really diverse show" Ruess said. "I think it will be a great show personally. We always try to find a balance between slow and fast songs and old and new songs.
