Children’s Tunes Revive Spirit of Punk Rock
NPR – Dec 6, 2006
“When [punk] started it had an energy and it had this sense of ‘We’re just going to do it ourselves. ‘ I think a lot of the kids’ music we’re seeing now is artists saying ‘I just want to put out a kids’ album and I’m going to record it on my own time I’m going to record it on my own dime’” Shepherd says. Shepherd the father of a 5-year-old daughter and 17-month-old son cites the group Wee Hairy Beasties as an example. The group actually counts veteran punk rockers among its members. The band members sound like they’re having a lot of fun on their new release Animal Crackers says Shepherd. “They’re not talking down to kids they’re just playing these characters and having lots of fun doing it and I think the recording really shows that” Shepherd says.

With hindsight…
Leeds Today – Dec 6, 2006
So I could really have done with hindsight that night 30 years ago. With hindsight I would have seen what soon became evident. The British music scene needed punk. Rock had become Establishment itself. With one or two exceptions rock stars had become comfortably dumb.

Actually since the Miami-Florida International brawl is a no-brainer for the coveted No. 5 spot it’s not that difficult at all. CBGB & MFUG which stands for Country Bluegrass Blues and ther Music for Uplifting Gormandizers helped launch the career of Patti Smith Blondie Talking Heads and The Ramones. So in tribute to CBGB the fighting Canes and punks everywhere the Bottom 10 will use song titles from The Ramones to guide us through the bottom of the college football barrel… 5 spot it’s not that difficult at all. Deck the halls with rock ‘n’ roll

com For your little cousin who’s just starting to play guitar and needs something to bash along withFucked Up Hidden World (Jade Tree) Toronto’s Fucked Up ditch their mostly seven-inch release style to let loose this blend of ’80s hardcore with—well pretty much all the rock they could find. This might even serve to get the little tykes away from punk and into music that’s you know hard. My Chemical Romance The Black Parade (Reprise) I guess the best way to stop being called “emo” is to take your guitar and just try to fucking destroy. A rock opera that owes a lot more to metal than their black-nails-and-eyeliner roots The Black Parade fairly solidly cements My Chemical Romance as one of the biggest names in punk. Cancer Bats Birthing the Giants (Abacus) They’ve got big friends (Alexisonfire namely) and bigger guitars mixing hardcore screams with anger-the-parishioners metal riffs all wrapped in a punk snarl.

Sitting in his usual seat with either acoustic or electric guitar in tow Ribot delves into “exercises” of noise punk and classical pieces he’s written teaching aspiring students of guitar a certain aesthetic sensibility—think rock school for the avant-garde rocker. Ribot has dedicated Exercises to Robert Quine the legendary guitarist of Richard Hell and the Voidoids with whom he collaborated until Quine’s tragic death in 2004. “He was a master of the idea of futility in music and had ineffable connection to punk rock” Ribot recalls. As for Ceramic Dog’s palate for sonic salvos Ribot might attribute it to a recent studio happening. “I had an amazing recording session with Robert Plant” he says. “Given my particular adolescence this was a meaningful event. I’ve been a lucky guy but to play ‘Whole Lotta Love’—that’s beyond.

“Tell us about the general plot of the show”It’s about Bel who’s a nine-year-old girl who’s obsessed with pop music. We send her dad our CD at his talent company and he throws it in the bin. But she listens to it and thinks it’s the best music she’s ever heard and says she wants to manage us. The whole series is about her trying to get us to the big time and the ups and downs of trying to make it. “Do you find it strange watching yourself on tv?”Not really. In Northern Ireland I’ve done lots of ads and tv shows before so it’s not really that big a thing for me. “What were you doing before auditioning for Bel’s Boys?”Music wise I’ve been playing the guitar since I was thirteen… They write their own songs and are really talented at what they do. So if we’re compared to them it would be a huge compliment. “How would you best describe your music?”It’s kind of retro pop-punk with a kind of McFly edge to it. It’s also like some of the bands from the sixties. “What children’s shows did you grow up with?”Farmhouse has to be up there. Also Finders Keepers was a good one. “How did the interest of a record company come about?”Well because the tv show was about a band they had a soundtrack of what’s being played and it turned out the songs were really good and marketable.
