Alternative Yuletide music
Malaysia Star – Dec 18, 2006
r is it? Perhaps this year it’s time for a different sort of Christmas music. With a virtual plethora of so-called “alternative” Yuletide tunes out there yet to be discovered by the average seasonal devotee who probably thinks that the sappy Mistletoe and Wine is about as far as the phrase “alternative Christmas song” gets perhaps it’s time to show some long overdue appreciation for these decidedly unconventional Christmas tunes. So in conjunction with Christmas 2006 here are 10 solid representative examples of unorthodox Yuletide melodies. Be warned though listening to some of these tunes requires a certain degree of listener discretion due to their rather shall we say offbeat nature. FAIRYTALE F NEW YRK (The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl 1987) The ultimate alternative Christmas tune this fabulous eminently radio-friendly ballad is done as a touching duet by Irish folk-punk upstarts The Pogues and late singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl… GRANDMA GT RUN VER BY A REINDEER (Elmo and Patsy 1983) This comedy cult classic recounts the unforgettable incident when the drunk grandmother of the family got killed in a hit-and-run propagated by a busy Santa. It was later made into an animated feature for television in 2000 but reportedly it didn’t actually live up to the hilarity of the original lyrics. CHRISTMAS IN FEBRUARY (Lou Reed 1989) Punk godfather Lou Reed put out this vicious war-themed Yuletide number in 1989 that sombrely chronicles the experiences of US soldiers in the Vietnam War. With hard-hitting lyrics like “Sam lost his arm in some border town his fingers are mixed with someone’s crop” and “Those gooks were fierce and fearless that’s the price you pay when you invade” this is most definitely not at the top of any chorister’s list of Christmas carols. HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS VER) (John Lennon 1971) riginally a trenchant anti-war protest song with typical Wall of Sound production by the legendary Phil Spector this Lennon classic has metamorphosed into a certified Christmas standard and was even covered by ghastly commercial diva Celine Dion on a 1998 album. The words are derived from the text of a 1969 anti-Vietnam War campaign by Lennon and wife Yoko no who had put out billboard advertisements in various cities proclaiming that “War Is ver! (If You Want It). Happy Christmas from John and Yoko”.

Chris Paulson new video & coming New Year program
Global Surf News – Dec 18, 2006
but he never lost interest in music. In the early eighties he bought a new guitar and started playing music again. In addition to the sixties and seventies music he grew up listening to he was inspired by the late seventies’ punk rock movement and started getting into old rock’n'roll country and blues. At the restaurant where he washed dishes and eventually learned to cook there was live music every night of the week and jazz musicians such as Sy Perkoff and Mark Naftalin would perform regularly. While living in San Francisco he started attending the monday night jam sessions at the Saloon on Grant Avenue performing there with Johnny Nitro Lisa Kindred and Gino Skaggs. Chris went to Europe in 1987 just to have a look around and ended up in Turkey where he met his future wife. He followed her back to Germany and began performing on the streets there.
Lou Reed Says They’re All Whores You Get the Recognition You…
Rolling Stone – Dec 18, 2006
The venerable news pondering publication named “you” as its person of the year 2006. You were recognized in honor of your rampant insatiable use of the internet and you should be thrilled even though everybody knows you only won cause they couldn’t secure exclusive covers with either Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong-il. Were Air ever not “in a Zen mood” or feeling influenced by “classical music” on any of their records? Anyway this time around on new album Pocket Symphony (out March 20th) they are.

Her band’s second album Show Your Bones (Polydor) proved that there was much substance beneath the style. Nick Zinner’s roaring distorted guitars dominated the sound but the addition of uncharacteristic acoustic guitars allowed the winning melodies to breathe. ‘s antics may overshadow the music but these were songs worth showing off about. Less worried about image was Karin Dreijer Andersson of the Swedish electronica duo The Knife. Best known for their song “Heartbeats” which Jos?onz?z transformed into an unrecognisable acoustic twinkler on an advert for televisions they became darker and more haunting than ever on their third album Silent Shout (Brille). In contrast the most fun to be had this year was in the hyperactive presence of the Brazilian sextet (five girls and a boy) Cansei de Ser Sexy whose singer calls herself Lovefoxxx and whose band name translates as “Tired of Being Sexy”. With the vibrant disco punk of their self-titled debut album (Sub Pop) they emerged from a S?Paulo scene that few in the UK had previously encountered.
