East Bay punk: Two decades down . . .
Stanford Daily – Jan 26, 2007
16 and 17 of 2006 East Bay punk legends Rancid played the Warfield. For fans of the genre the show was a meeting of the past present and future of the East Bay scene. Young East Bay punks Static Thought opened for Rancid in what may be a glimpse of the future but was at the same time recognition of the past. Static Thought is striking in that they aren?t new sounding but instead recall their heroes Rancid and their predecessors peration Ivy. The headlining act itself was full of nostalgic songs and memories for a band pushing 20 years together and with several albums to their name. Songs like ?Journey to the End of the East Bay? recalled the punk scene when Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong were growing up by telling the tale of their former band peration Ivy. ld punks smiled as former frontman of peration Ivy Jesse Michaels stepped onstage… But the East Bay became known as a punk Mecca largely based on the contributions of the second wave of punk and ska music in the late 80s. peration Ivy broke up in 1989; within days a band called Green Day was taking up the mantle of East Bay punk music. Green Day Rancid Link 80 NFX and the Mr. T Experience all contributed to the vibrant East Bay music scene. This ?second wave? of punk gave the genre and the East Bay scene a name. Hits like Rancid?s ?.

by Kavitha VignarajahAge: 28In the sweltering summer of 2005 CBGB?s closure was imminent. wner Hilly Kristal had sworn to fight for the venerable institution but the situation looked bleak. The kings and queens of punk rock-? and hordes of lesser known bands-? had graced this stage so I went longing to catch a glimpse of greatness before it was lost to the annals of rock history. CBGB did not disappoint-? that night Paperdoll performed. n a bitterly cold January evening in 2007 Paperdoll takes the stage again. This time the venue is Snitch an elongated space featuring a stage bizarrely positioned along the right side. Co-owned by Velvet Revolver bandmates Scott Weiland and Duff McKagan Snitch epitomizes ?Appetite?-era Guns n? Roses-? plastic cups juxtaposed with red velvet banquettes ostentatious yet raw… can’t wait to hear more! don’t stop!. But then again really good music like this should be played loud. People with this type of talent do not stay hidden for long. But then again really good music like this should be played loud.
