After the band splintered amid internal tension in 1984 the Police’s singer Sting pursued a successful solo career meandering from the band’s reggae-influenced rock and experimenting with other forms of world music. Sting has also become a reliable concert box-office draw in his own right. His 2004 tour with Annie Lennox for example rang up box office sales of more than $50 million and ranked as one of the 10 best-selling tours of the year according to the trade magazine Pollstar. Last year Sting’s first classical album “Songs From the Labyrinth” featuring music written by the 16th-century composer John Dowland topped the classical album sales chart for 2006. The Game Nelly and Joel and Benji Madden will act as celebrity judges in Music Nation’s online music-video competition which will result in three rock pop and urban artists getting signed to Epic. Rotem (Britney Spears Destiny’s Child) and Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance All-American Rejects); Jive Urban Music President Mark Pitts; and Epic President Charlie Walk are also on the panel. Voting which the public can also participate in is now open for the 15-week competition at MusicNation… Joey Ramone’s mother Charlotte Lesher died Saturday after suffering a heart attack in her home in Queens New York according to the late punk icon’s Web site JoeyRamone. “Mama Ramone” as Joey called her is survived by her son Mickey Leigh. - Brent Liles a former bassist for the 1980s punk rock group Social Distortion was struck and killed by a truck while riding a bicycle authorities said Wednesday. No immediate charges were brought against the driver.
