Pain and darkness in dark world
NEWS.com.au – Feb 23, 2007
Bands that best represent the emo movement today are Panic! at the Disco AFI Dashboard Confessional and My Chemical Romance. Though emo and goth both had origins in similar types of music and began about the same time there are marked differences in the styles. Despite a close early relationship with punk music today the musicians most associated with the goth subculture are more closely aligned with metal. Share this article.

and Hüsker Dü were fairly conventional in terms of song structure and melody Sonic Youth began their career by abandoning any pretense of traditional rock & roll conventions. Borrowing heavily from the free-form noise experimentalism of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges and melding it with a performance art aesthetic borrowed from the New York post-punk avant-garde Sonic Youth redefined what noise meant within rock & roll. Sonic Youth rarely rocked though they were inspired directly by hardcore punk post-punk and no wave. Instead their dissonance feedback and alternate tunings created a new sonic landscape one that redefined what rock guitar could do. Their trio of independent late-’80s records — EVL Sister Daydream Nation — became touchstones for a generation of indie rockers who either replicated the noise or reinterpreted it in a more palatable setting. As their career progressed Sonic Youth grew more palatable as well as their more free-form songs began to feel like compositions and their shorter works began to rock harder… Rather Ripped an album that fused the mellow sprawling feel of the band’s previous two albums with a more stripped-down sound was released in 2006. In 2008 the band resurrected the SYR series: J’Accuse Ted Hughes arrived that spring as a vinyl-only release while Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth chronicled an improvised performance at 2005’s Roskilde Festival. setNGrp(1);lsConf. setNKw(10);lsConf.
MCR Bring The Black Parade To Life – News Story | Music Celebrity…

textContenturl:window. href} {button:true} );MANCHESTER New Hampshire — Fellow marchers in The Black Parade: If you are like me after being blown away last fall by the astounding musical achievement that is My Chemical Romance’s latest album you thought to yourself ‘How are they ever gonna do this live?’ The record — art rock meets glam rock meets punk with a dash of vaudeville — is chock-full of death and hospitals and cancer and soldiers and scary teenagers and it begs for an over-the-top live show. At long last the boys have delivered. (See clips from MCR’s kickoff show and watch John Norris chat with the band right here. )After months of teasing us with holiday radio sets and festival dates overseas the Parade came to life on Thursday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena here — and we actually got two bands in one. The group’s set ended with a blistering half-hour set from MCR as MCR with the Jersey boys breathing new life into the angst-filled punk songs that defined their first two records… But what you won’t find in the show are dancers actors or cheesy dramatic interludes. My Chem wisely chose not to go the Broadway-musical route in bringing the Parade to life though they said that possibility was there. “The band is not trying to be anything but the band and the music is speaking for itself” Gerard continued. “There was a point when we were making the record that we were thinking we could have all this extra stuff [on tour] but as a musician you know in your heart that that’s not you. “It’s a fine line between having a really good show that will be remembered” Bob Bryar opined “and letting all that other stuff become the show. I think it’s more special if we let the focus always be on us. “We’re so over the top anyway that why would we want somebody else up there hamming it up?” Gerard laughed.

while you hear plenty of power chords and gravelly voices some might argue that it’s hard to find the spirit of Nirvana in any of it. So if he were still with us where — if anywhere — would Cobain fit? Would he still be making music on a grand stage or would he have disappeared from the spotlight becoming a recluse like Syd Barrett or Jeff Mangum? Would he have split up Nirvana as several biographies (and his widow Courtney Love) insist? And if so would fans greet a Nirvana reunion with the unbridled enthusiasm that the Pixies or the Police have found? Would they still even care?To get some answers MTV News reached out to people who knew Cobain as a friend a musical compatriot and a subject. And while some respectfully declined to participate we did receive several eye-opening responses that painted a picture of Cobain that few have seen. While he may have been a Man of His Times he was also most certainly a man — a conflicted quick-witted one who would have loved YouTube been jealous of the White Stripes and found a kindred spirit in Pete Doherty. I know that he really looked up to artists like Neil Young or John Lennon and so I think he would’ve probably made solo records like they did: really diverse and eclectic sounding and on a very not-regular schedule.
Assignment Six Finalist: Kimberly Egolf on The Klaxons
Rolling Stone – Feb 23, 2007
Note: This is not an official Rolling Stone article. What follows is a submission to the “I’m From Rolling Stone” writing competition. The Klaxons’ Myths of the Near Futureby Kimberly EgolfAge: 24Klaxons Myths of the Near FutureReleased 13 February 2007 on iTunesIn the fall of 2005 as the Arctic Monkeys colonized UK and US airwaves the Klaxons met for the first time knowing only that they didn?t want to play post-punk guitar music. Now they?re spearheading the ?new rave? sound being hailed as the next big thing to come out of the UK. It?s a label they invented and a sound based loosely on elements of late ?90s glow-stick-and-sweat rave music. The Klaxons? debut album Myths of the Near Future reintroduces high-energy gut-shaking beats pounding under euphoric vocal harmonies and fuzzily cascading guitars and keyboards. Post-punk this most certainly is not… Ballard and dystopian novelist Thomas Pynchon the Klaxons imagine a world ? not so very unlike our own ? on the verge of catastrophe. Like their music this world is sober and manic at the same time both fearing and looking forward to the near future. If only Big Brother turns out to be this damn fun. With their debut album (following up their successful Xan Valleys EP of late 2006) the Klaxons are already constructing their future mythic status. Your near future should include theirs. The Klaxons? debut album is out now on iTunes.

Belfast Telegraph – Feb 23, 2007
Having played support for Kings of Leon Faithless and Arctic Monkeys amongst others this time the lads are hogging the headline slot – support on Monday comes from And So I watch You From Afar. It’s well worth forking out a fiver for the chance to catch Dublin-based Flight Like Apes who play their debut Belfast gig at The Limelight next Thursday when they’ll prove they can do a lot more than just monkey around when it comes to driving bass and digital distortion. The female-fronted foursome has been together for less than six months but their lively blend of new wave punk and indie rock has certainly proved a knockout with gig-goers. Jedi Jane also on the bill offer something a bit more challenging with their sometimes quiet sometimes shouty vocals and alleged propensity for little or no space between songs as well as a relaxed attitude about who in the group actually sings them. Anyone who was around in the late 1970s and early 1980s and who has lived to tell the tale may find their rough ready passionate and energetic oeuvre reminiscent of the days when punk met rock with predictably explosive results. Coda old favourites on the local scene complete the bill… At the rate Duke Special – who plays Belfast’s Ulster Hall on Tuesday and the Nerve Centre in Derry next Thursday – is going it won’t be long before he’s playing London’s Royal Albert Hall. From playing gigs (admittedly sell-out gigs) in Belfast’s Empire club not that long ago he’s now a firm fixture on the likes of BBC Radio 2 Radio Ulster and has also appeared on Later With Jools Holland. Ticket holders should make a note of the change of the Belfast date as he was originally set to play on Wednesday February 28 but the concert had to be brought forward by a day to allow him to make it to the Choice Music Awards in Dublin the following night.
