ver the course of the next few years the Tubes earned a devoted cult following on the strength of Spooner’s parodic songs and the group’s surreal live shows which featured Waybill adopting a variety of personas including the “crippled Nazi” Dr. Strangekiss country singer Hugh Heifer and Quay Lewd a drug-addled British pop star. After signing to A&M in 1975 they released their self-titled debut followed a year later by Young and Rich; while both failed to transfer the manic energy and theatrical complexity of their live set onto record the single “White Punks on Dope” became a minor hit and a radio staple. After 1977′s failed concept record The Tubes Now the group toured England where a series of banned performances made them a media sensation. However during the recording of the concert LP What Do You Want From Live? Waybill broke his leg onstage while acting out his punk character Johnny Bugger; the remainder of the tour was cancelled and with it died the band’s chart momentum. Waybill broke his leg onstage while acting out his punk character Johnny Bugger; the remainder of the tour was cancelled and with it died the band’s chart momentum. After returning to the U. they recruited producer Todd Rundgren and recorded 1979′s Remote Control a concept album exploring the influence of television; when it met a similar commercial fate as its predecessors the Tubes were dropped by A&M. After signing to Capitol they recorded 1981′s Completion Backwards Principle an album based on an actual sales training instruction manual; both “Talk to You Later” and “Don’t Want to Wait Anymore” earned significant radio play and the LP became the Tubes’ first Top 40 hit.

New York Times – Mar 5, 2007
This Montreal post-punk group specializes in ecstatic refusal an odd mix of despair contempt and uplifting idealism. Rejecting the rock scene it has created its own mini-utopia where men wear suspenders and musicians are sincere and proudly nerdy. Arcade Fire is now one of the most revered indie acts around thanks to “Funeral” its hypnotically raging 2004 debut. “Neon Bible” the phenomenal follow-up will challenge the band’s attempts to stay cult-size. It is regal and beautiful with mournful anthems and bombastic orchestration that suits the urgency of the lyrics… He wonders: How do you fill a spiritual void when you distrust organized religion? How do you escape fearsome times without wallowing in vacant escapism? He doesn’t have any answers and wastes energy on easy targets like MTV. But the shimmering music transforms bleakness into a “vial of hope” and for now that’s enough. It’s not the only yelp of vexation delivered here by Mr. Farrar the group’s lead singer chief guitarist and guiding force. But he seems not paralyzed but energized: more driven than he’s been in years.
Music Review: the Stooges Return
San Francisco Chronicle – Mar 5, 2007
tmpl –>(03-05) 13:46 PST (AP) — The Stooges “The Weirdness” (Virgin): With spastic singer Iggy Pop at the helm the Stooges tore through the late ’60s and early ’70s ending a three-album reign of brilliantly primal proto-punk with 1973′s iconic “Raw Power. odles of groups have cited the Stooges’ rock ‘n’ roll mix of sweat and danger as an influence. Even Pop’s long string of solo records following the band’s brief life couldn’t touch the Stooges’ legendary aura. That’s what makes the reunion album “The Weirdness” disappointing — it’s not dangerous or weird. Almost 60 Pop is still a wiry wild-eyed fireball of energy onstage as he proved at 2003′s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton and drummer Scott Asheton… Even Pop’s long string of solo records following the band’s brief life couldn’t touch the Stooges’ legendary aura. That’s what makes the reunion album “The Weirdness” disappointing — it’s not dangerous or weird. Almost 60 Pop is still a wiry wild-eyed fireball of energy onstage as he proved at 2003′s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton and drummer Scott Asheton. That show jump-started a reunion tour which led to producer Steve Albini recording the Asheton brothers Pop and former Minutemen fIREHSE bassist Mike Watt in his Chicago studio. But while garage-pumped songs such as “My Idea of Fun” and “ATM” growl similar to the Stooges’ old turf the lyrical grit and genius is all but gone. It’s a muted cry versus the snarling opener of ’70s anthem “Search and Destroy”: “I’m a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm.

And “Bulls in Brooklyn” is powered by Mrotek’s stomping drums (he wrote it to sound like Glitter’s stadium-uniting “Rock & Roll”). In short it’s the kind of album a band makes when it’s gunning for the stars. Whether or not TAI make it remains to be seen. “We were on a headlining tour with Panic! at the Disco opening up for us and they’d have a better crowd reaction than us and it was a weird thing. That was the last time we’ll ever be above them on the bill and that made us feel a little weird to be honest” Mrotek said.
Chemical Romance powers through its meaty ‘Black Parade’
Rocky Mountain News – Mar 5, 2007
The question of course is whether six musicians could pull off theambitious material in a live setting particularly the soaringWelcome to the Black Parade. Way and company proved themselves up to the task with sweat runningdown his white-makeup face just three songs into the album. Dressed in the same skeletal marching-band suits as the song’svideo the band delivered the music with flair and a theatrical bentthat had much of the young crowd entranced. This is the generation thatcame of age in the soul-killing era of Britney and *NSYNC so seeingthis level of ambition and showmanship – glam rock with a punk edge -was for many a revelation. The band isn’t shy about its influences; pre-show music includedselections from Pink Floyd and Queen. Way’s showmanship and charisma managed to push a lot of the musicover the top descending into pure camp at times with a preening walkand a goading of the crowd with a hand cocked to his ear. A muddy mixunfortunately left his voice and guitarist Ray Toro’s leads buried attimes.
