Music Review | The Thermals
New York Times – Mar 6, 2007
At times it sounds like a faster and cheaper companion to “Separation Sunday” the religion-obsessed 2005 album by the Hold Steady. (As it happens the two bands are well acquainted and at least one member of the Hold Steady was in the crowd. ) Even more than that band this one thrives on the tension between straight-ahead music and twisty lyrics. ne of Sunday’s highlights was “Returning to the Fold” a perfectly ambivalent song about belief and belonging the lyric booklet transcribes one line as “i forgot i needed god like (a) big brother” that’s built on a loud rude guitar riff. After the album was finished Ms. Harris recruited a drummer Lorin Coleman and a second guitarist Joel Burrows whose chords sometimes allowed Mr… Harris to ignore his guitar and gesticulate. Foster kept kicking the songs forward; in the venerable punk tradition she played almost nothing but rapid-fire down-strokes. There are a few places where “The Body” starts to drag and although the Thermals never tired on Sunday night it was sometimes hard to keep up with their relentless pace. But at a Thermals concert if one song leaves you cold you can always wait a minute or so for the next one. And the best new songs like the (very) minor hit “A Pillar of Salt” which could be about escaping to America or from it showed just how much joy and mystery can still be wrung from a few well-chosen chord changes. “I stick to the ground” Mr.

Fifth Amendment – Double Jeopardy: No we didn’t make this up: Christian rockers Relient K actually have a new song called “Plead the Fifth” perfect for our theme this week. n that song and one other “Deathbed” frontman Matt Thiessen takes the perspective of a man living in the 19th century and spouts a conspiracy theory about Lincoln’s assassination. That proves the pop-punks have been flexing their political-history chops — although ol’ Abe would probably suggest they subtract one from the five in their new album title Five Score and Seven Years Ago. Sixth Amendment – Speedy Trial: n the subject of speed “Pace Yourself” is sure to be the highlight on the Higher’s second album n Fire — a version of the song that was remixed by Fall ut Boy’s Patrick Stump caps off the LP. ther songs on the Las Vegas band’s album include “Rock My Body” “Insurance?” and “ur Movie Rules. Seventh Amendment – Trial by Jury: Defendants facing a prosecutor and jury probably often feel like it’s Them Vs.

Listening to MacGowan sneer and snarl his way through Ewan MacColl’s “Dirty ld Town” was a sharp reminder why so many in the folk community first bristled at the Pogues’ early ’80s arrival. But like any number of bands who rock the boat the Pogues have long since become standard-bearers in their own right. As the group careened through songs such as “Streams of Whiskey” “If I Should Fall From Grace with God” “The Body of an American” and “The Irish Rover” it was hard to hear them as anything less than classics themselves traditional music for anyone raised on punk who had their horizons expanded by groups like the Pogues. Besides the Pogues were always more punk in spirit than execution and the group’s Monday night set (the first of two shows) underscored the importance of musicianship as well as attitude. Co-founder James Fearnley dug into his accordion like it was a more typical garage band accoutrement while fellow co-founder Spider Stacy almost always at McGowan’s side made playing the tin whistle seem cool. Never mere Irish folk rockers or even Irish punk iconoclasts the Pogues also reminded the rabidly enthusiastic crowd how diverse their vision was encompassing everything from exotic Middle Eastern melodies in “Turkish Song of the Damned” to Mexican music in “Fiesta” the latter of which featured Stacy and MacGowan slapping thin sheets of metal against their heads to the punctuate the frenetic beat. Most inspiring was how battle scared and beaten-up the Pogues still looked and played very much like a band… But like any number of bands who rock the boat the Pogues have long since become standard-bearers in their own right. Yes MacGowan and his incongruously brilliant lyrics were a vital component to the performance as was his ragged appearance.

‘s Murmur Revisiting the debut they never quite topped Meet the Web Sheriff Fighting music piracy via ominous blog comments and pre-written apologies Andy Warhol was the ultimate New York City tastemaker bringing pop and commercial culture together and blurring the lines between nightlife and the art world. After him there have only been a few people who’ve managed to make some larger cultural impact—whether in music art or fashion—using his or her era’s nightlife scene as a medium. Here are a few legacies Ultragrrrl’s ultimately aspiring to live up to: Larry Levan As a DJ he spun a unique blend of soul gospel European disco and rock redefining dance music at the club Paradise Garage from 1977 to 1987. He helped to create “the garage sound” winning him a huge following among frequenters like Chaka Khan Grace Jones and Keith Haring. Fab 5 Freddy Before he was the host of Yo! Chi Chi Valenti and Johnny Dynell The husband-and-wife duo hosted their Tuesday night party “Jackie 60″ from 1990 to 2000 in the meatpacking district before the meatpacking district existed. The party which had weekly themes ranging from Stevie Nicks tribute nights to “Lesbians in Latex” was heavily invested in performance incorporating plays and poetry readings and served as an artistic haven that turned gender performance into high-kitsch theater. Larry Tee DJ Larry Tee swooped in with electroclash at a time when the ecstasy-fueled drum’n'bass and ’90s rave scene had gotten too cheesy drawing people back to a decade earlier.
