The fourth songAnne is a psychedelic freak-out. When asked by their major-label boss if they have enough songsfor a whole album they lie – “Yeah sure” – before scampering offto write another four that day. Thirty-seven years later and the three original Stooges (thelate Dave Alexander has been replaced by bassist Mike Watt) enter astate-of-the-art Chicago studio with visionary punk producer SteveAlbini. This time the band has 30 songs and instead of dipping into abowl of LSD trips Iggy Pop prepares for the sessions with a dip inthe hotel pool. They emerge with 12 songs that make up their fourthalbum The Weirdness. Speaking on the phone this week from Miami Pop says Cale andAlbini are surprisingly alike. “I’ve never thought to compare the two but they have a lot incommon… “It takes moneyto live like a king” he sings on ATM and Free andFreaky could be the worst song of Pop’s career – it should bethrown in the same pop-culture rubbish bin as Lou Reed’s direFuture Farmers of America. Along with his daily tai chi exercises Pop uses music toexorcise demons so he can relax in his tropical animal kingdomaway from “the weirdness”. “These are inner things and they are going to come out when youdo something really important. I don’t really have anything crucialin my life – besides basic survival – that rivals this so this isthe place to put it. When I’m really upset about something I blurtout my anger in songs – like She Took My Money and TheWeirdness. The Weirdness is a metaphor for the world I escapedto get away and be on my own.

“Nothing bad came of it” Butler says in mock defensiveness. Such antics all part of Arcade Fire’s anything-can-happen live shows cover up weaknesses in the band’s songwriting. It’s not that the band writes subpar music or lyrics it’s that their songs sound less distinct on record than they do in concert. This band is meant to be seen as well as heard and listeners can’t fully understand or appreciate its music until they’ve experienced Arcade Fire in person. “The physical exertion that this band puts into performances is the most challenging thing” Win Butler says. “It feels on tour sometimes like we’re sprinters trying to run a marathon. ” The new album’s denser and more forbidding songs may make that task more difficult… In rock `n’ roll there can be a lot of divisions between things: the singer the songwriter the arranger the producer the choreographer the stylist. But to me it all belongs together. ” In the do-it-yourself fashion of punk bands from Black Flag to Fugazi the band has usurped many of those roles. They went without a manager for years own their own studio in a century-old church south of Montreal and essentially paid for the recording of Neon Bible themselves with revenue accrued from sales of Funeral and concerts. “They’re a family in that Win and Will are brothers and Win and Regine are married but that’s also how they operate as a band and a business” McCaughan says. “Even when we first met them it was apparent that they were a little more mature than the average young band putting out its first record. ” n stage that familial familiarity leads to interaction so spirited that shows sometimes resemble a Baptist church service more than a concert.
