The record’s approach divided fans and critics however and when the 1971 follow-up High Time failed to even reach the charts Atlantic released MC5 from their contract; in addition to filing for bankruptcy the group was dogged by mounting drug problems and in early 1972 Davis was dismissed from the lineup as a result of heroin abuse. Bassist Steve Moorhouse stepped in as his replacement but soon after both Tyner and Thompson announced their retirement from active touring; on New Year’s Eve of 1972 the group played their final gig appearing at the Grande Ballroom — the site of so many past glories — for just 500 dollars. As the years went by however MC5′s influence expanded; punk hard rock and power pop all clearly reflected the band’s impact and by the 1990s they were the subject of a steady stream of reissues and rarities packages. Following the band’s demise its members pursued new projects: Tyner released several solo records and also earned acclaim for his photography before suffering a fatal heart attack on September 17 1991. Smith meanwhile formed Sonic’s Rendezvous with fellow Detroit music legend Scott Morgan issuing the underground classic “City Slang” in 1977 before leaving the group; in 1980 he wed Patti Smith dying of heart failure on November 4 1994. After spending much of the following decades battling drug addiction — including a two-year prison stint — Kramer resurfaced in 1995 with a blistering solo album The Hard Stuff the first of several new efforts for punk label Epitaph. Less successful were Davis who seemingly disappeared from sight after a tenure with underground legends Destroy All Monsters and Thompson whose solo ambitions went largely unrealized… As the years went by however MC5′s influence expanded; punk hard rock and power pop all clearly reflected the band’s impact and by the 1990s they were the subject of a steady stream of reissues and rarities packages. textContenturl:window. href} {button:true} ); AUSTIN Texas — Every March the music industry throws on a pair of shorts slathers on the SPF 45 and heads on down to Austin for South by Southwest a weeklong celebration of bands BBQ and (sometimes free!) beer. It’s a brutal bacchanal and music marathon powered by thousands of acts playing in hundreds of venues — at all hours — plus an unreal number of open bar tabs and fancy private parties. Sleep is not exactly a top priority so MTV News has dispatched three of its most tireless reporters into the fray. They’ll be filing reports a few times each day (scroll down for the evening report) which will chiefly serve as a way of keeping you up to speed about what’s going on deep in the heart of Texas but also double as a convenient way — for us anyway — of making sure everyone’s still alive. The DayJames Montgomery MTV News writer: Just had my first totally random totally awesome moment here at SXSW… I did get to witness a blistering set of anthemic honest-to-goodness punk rock from Gainesville Florida’s Against Me!. (f course I had to sit through 45 minutes of Jack’s Mannequin to do it so let’s call it a Pyrrhic victory. )The fiercely DIY quartet turned the punk community on its collective head in late 2005 when they announced that they had signed with — gasp! — a major label but if their sweaty set at the Sire Records showcase was any indication all those old wounds have healed. Many fists were pumped many hard-charging choruses bellowed and many unfortunate tattoos revealed and the band seemed to be having a ball unveiling songs from their upcoming album New Wave which displayed a decidedly dance-y streak. Hey even comedian David Cross who caught the show in his “official undercover celebrity uniform” (read: a flannel shirt and a ratty ball cap) approved. And if it’s good enough for America’s foremost indie humorist then it’s certainly good enough for you. John Norris: Now that’s the South by Southwest I know and love.

It’s quite odd you leave your hotel get some food (burritos for breakfast – bleurgh!) and by the time you’re done eating the day is already two bands in. So you go straight to a show then run to another show then back to the hotel to write about it and then you’re out for the evening. It’s non stop but it’s non stop fun so we’re not complaining. Today for example NME rendezvoused at a restaurant (fajitas for breakfast today) then walked two blocks to the Fader House where Gallows were jumping around like maniacs… Today for example NME rendezvoused at a restaurant (fajitas for breakfast today) then walked two blocks to the Fader House where Gallows were jumping around like maniacs. At 2pm this is quite the spectacle. The punk-heavy stuff early afternoon would usually be kind of nauseating especially after fajitas but Gallows are so brilliantly tight! Yeah they’re loud but they have amazing SNGS. A band can’t just get up there and be as loud and heavy as possible and scream like a banshee and think that’s music. Gallows can play and write and sing and perform. And we’re totally going to see them again tomorrow. Last night The Horrors did their thing at their label showcase and Faris saw fit to break stuff tear stuff throw stuff and generally act like a spoilt petulant child.
