My Chemical Romance aka Black Parade claims glam’s mantel
San Francisco Chronicle – Mar 19, 2007
After rolling onstage strapped to a hospital gurney Way led his bandmates through 60 minutes of songs that ranged from the glammy T. Rex chug of “Teenagers” to the Queen-gone-punk majesty of “Welcome to the Black Parade. ” Backing the music was an elaborate stage show. What can be said about this stage show? Well there were explosions flames shooting 10 feet high and a billowing miasma of smoke while MCR played a polka then a waltz while Way wept and the crowd roared — and this was just during one song: “Mama. ” During “House of Wolves” the drum set rotated; with “Disenchanted” came a cascade of sparklers; for the power ballad “I Don’t Love You” black-and-white zeppelins floated past a three-dimensional backdrop of a Gothic cityscape. Strobe lights flickered off and on. Confetti cannons periodically doused the mosh pit with two-tone paper scraps… ” Favorites such as “Helena” and “The Ghost of You” were included and Way made a point of showing he remembers his punk roots with a shout-out to NFX’s Fat Mike and his San Francisco label Fat Wreck Chords. Fat Wreck Chords also happens to be the home label of Rise Against the night’s opening act. The moral? h something about how punks with pyrotechnics are still punks at the end of the day and Queen rocks as hard as hardcore and fire is fun when you’re singing about your mother. Patty’s Day especially since my ancestry’s Scottish (and heck no I’m not wearing green). Mike Daniel 8:25pm And I’m rocking UT to one of pop-punk’s inventors Manchester England’s Buzzcocks. It’s great energy music and these blokes have only become tighter and more compact in the 31 years that they’ve been around. Viral harmonies vital chord changes (it was arguably the first punk act to emphasize melody and song structure; its songs commonly use more than one key and three or four chords) and a rigid rhythm section are making this gig an absolute treat to witness. The band has a new album out (Flat-Pack Philosophy) and if the spirits above have a punk among them it’ll sell as quickly as the band’s songs finish (the new disc has 14 tunes and lasts only 36 minutes in adherence to proper punk bylaws)… Mike Daniel 8:25pm And I’m rocking UT to one of pop-punk’s inventors Manchester England’s Buzzcocks. Pop music provides a national identity based on creativity rather…
New Statesman – Mar 19, 2007
During the 50 years I’ve been alive this country has continued to produce masses of high-class music as well as absorbing and reinterpreting American music and saturating its youth in the leery attitudes that accompany it. Pop is the cry of the “outsider” – free speaking to a large audience. It has done more to remake British identity than any other form and the spirit of punk still inspires it. British music has always been mixed up in all senses. It is a democratic form and it is multicultural; it has been black and Asian working-class middle-class gay and lesbian. If I find myself talking to the kids about this it is because this is their history too and something they might like to know about – indeed probably should know about as an alternative education. The present commitment and fervency of religious believers is disconcerting impressive and daunting making us wonder what it is we believe.

Hold Steady keeps rock at high level
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Mar 19, 2007
What drew him to this band which makes its first Pittsburgh appearance in nearly three years tonight at the Rex?”There were two things about it: ne was what they already had and one was the potential that was there. bviously the lyrics are great. And I liked the concept of sort-of comfort-food music. The lyrics are all kind of about making sense of people’s lives in rock ‘n’ roll and the partying and all the great nights and terrible nights and we’re marrying it to this all-American music — stuff that everybody knows stuff that everybody grew up with stuff that’s a common language. Maybe the American folk music of the past 30 or 40 years is classic rock. I thought it was a great concept. I thought there was a lot of room to make the music more dramatic and more dynamic… “That material makes itself known anywhere there are rock shows and booze. Even though the band’s audience might be a bit more on the educated and indie side he says “they’re coming to a Hold Steady show by and large to get wasted and have a good time. In the same way the band stretches from classic rock to punk the fans who turn out to see them fall somewhere in between. “I think we draw people who don’t identify themselves as any particular kind of genre of rock people” Nicolay says. “People who identify themselves as punk-rock people or classic-rock people or indie-rock people are kind of putting themselves in a hole for social reasons. It’s not really about the music it’s about how you dress and who you hang out with and what shows you go to to meet what kind of girls or guys. I think the people that are attracted to us are people who have gone through all those phases but are now comfortable saying ‘I like punk rock and indie rock and hip-hop and classic rock and I’m comfortable about myself where I don’t have to base my identity on that.

In the words of the publisher: “The Taqwacores is to literature what the. “I have been awaiting the book’s arrival with more than a little interest because I accidentally had a hand in bringing it to Britain… At 17 he went off to Pakistan spent six hours a day studying religion came into contact with Afghan refugees and almost joined the Chechen fighters. But then he changed his mind went back to the US became disillusioned and turned into a punk Muslim. In case you’re wondering what a punk Muslim is or how to become one I’m not entirely sure either but in Knight’s case it means being “that guy at a party who just stands in the corner and talks shit about everyone”. That includes raising hell with the.

Bands fancy US but song not same
The Age – Mar 19, 2007
Bandrosters have been cut dramatically. Regular staff layoffs arecommon. The formerly prominent US music retailer Tower Recordsshuttered its last store late last year. Following consecutiveyears of contraction US CD sales are already down 15 per cent in2007. Yet as the South By Southwest (SXSW) music conference —the world’s largest musical flea market — wraps up today inAustin the consensus among attendees is that the wider musicindustry is relatively healthy. The music business itself is facing shifting trends. As lessphysical retail outlets stock CDs artists are empowered by digitaldistribution that often circumvents the major-label system… “It really is a case of ‘export or perish’ for most artists” hesays. Further because many businesses outside of major-labels arethriving a unique opportunity for artists who are not dependent onthe record business has been created. “For underground punk or metal bands say it’s actually easiernow than it used to be because the internet allows quicker cheaperand broader access to an audience for their music” Mr Watsonsays. Although bands such as Airbourne and the Vines have been cutfrom US labels according to Mr George there have been severalbands recently taking positive forward steps. These include Eskimo Joe Augie March the Cat Empire and theSick Puppies. All have recent US recording deals and plan to tourheavily.
