n first hearing as ogreish guitars wrestle for attention with trancey synths it’s hard to know what to make of such an improbable union. It’s like trying to swallow a pork chop cheesecake or a custard vindaloo. The jazz bandleader Eddie Condon said that when listening to new music he always asked himself “As it enters the ear does it come in like honey or does it come in like broken glass?” Well this debut album isn’t just a few shards. It’s a shattered chandelier the Louvre Pyramid ground to powder. Yet beneath the wilful brute-ugliness of the sound talent lurks. There it is in the splenetic ska of No Sssweat. There it is again in the rush-of-blood riff of Sorry You’re Not a Winner… Fans of the band’s explosively chaotic gigs are less likely to mind the album’s ungainlier moments. And as Johnny Rotten once sneered “If it’s too loud you’re too old. ” But then from under the Sex Pistols’ punk rubble big tunes often glinted. With Take to the Skies you have to dig a bit harder. Michael Deacon Brett Anderson Brett Anderson Drowned In Sound £10. 99 Two years ago Brett Anderson reunited with Bernard Butler his erstwhile sparring partner from Suede for one marvellous album under a new name the Tears. That he has now emerged as a solo artist seems a bold move albeit alongside another co-writing associate a Norwegian called Fred Ball who has previously worked with Cerys Matthews and K T Tunstall.

(From Irish Independent) Every week gigs across the capital routinely sell out within a matter of minutes; on the bus in the morning every other person has their iPod or MP3 player on the go. People are downloading their fave tunes from the net like there’s no tomorrow and the blogosphere is alive with the sound of music lovers ranting and panting about the latest buzz bands. All of which leads me to ask a simple question: why do you never hear decent music in Dublin bars? So many self-consciously trendy bars have sprung up in this city that if I see one more coffee-coloured sofa and ersatz Japanese lantern I’m going to reach for the kerosene and.

Doubt for awards

article-tools –> By Sydney Confidential March 24 2007 12:00am SKINNY American socialite Nicole Richie’s visit to Sydney next month is in doubt due to her continuing health problems. The shrinking star is due to accompany her boyfriend Good Charlotte punk rocker Joel Madden and his brother Benji to next month’s MTV Australian Video Music Awards at Luna Park on April 29. However Richie’s visit is looking unlikely after she collapsed on the set of The Simple Life a week ago prompting her US publicists to announce she has been diagnosed with the blood disorder hypoglycaemia. The condition means the tiny star’s blood sugar levels are often too low to provide an adequate amount of energy for her body. Perhaps it’s time the super-skinny star reassess her diet. The diagnosis comes less than a month after Richie was taken to hospital for dehydration during the filming of the new season of her reality show with on-again-off-again pal Paris Hilton.
