A Counteroffensive on Mt. Pleasant’s ‘Voluntary’ Music…
Washington Post – Apr 12, 2007
“The new group dubs itself Hear Mount Pleasant and its members are longtime activists and young newcomers — people such as Jason Kelly whose jazz combo sometimes plays on his front porch for all the neighbors to enjoy; Amber Gallup who loves “to go out to hear music and dance and I want to be able to do that in my own neighborhood and I’m angry that I can’t”; and Janelle Treibitz a puppeteer and waitress who adds that nobody wants Mount Pleasant to become another Adams Morgan but wonders why that means there can’t be a little life along the avenue. As far back as the 1940s country bands played Mount Pleasant Street. ver the years the music changed to rock and then punk and then Latin sounds but the scene remained — until the voluntary agreements came along. The group’s strategy is to fight the District’s policy — the city encourages noise-averse neighbors to negotiate voluntary agreements and has approved 447 such pacts in the past six years — with the very same policy. There’s no limit on the number of agreements a restaurant can sign so the activists propose to write pro-music agreements with the same places that signed anti-music deals. The city’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board would have to sort through the contradictions. Dream on says Laurie Collins.

If that is true I am grateful for having known worked with and fought alongside of Rick. Something is gnawing at me though. Why is it that Philadelphia punk scene leaders have such a short life expectancy? Eddie “Hacksaw” RichardsCarol SchutzbankLee ParisDavid WildmannAnd now Rick DobrowolskiAll at one time or another anchored the Philadelphia music scene. All were both street and book smart. All shared a common generosity of spirit. All had been seasoned by the scene but their spirits were not corrupted by it. All had managed my band Ruin at different stages of its incarnation.

In the San Francisco rock scene of the Great Unwashed Blue Cheer were like the dirty punks no one wanted around. nce billed as the “Loudest Band in the World” and some added “the dumbest” the metal pioneers pounded out heavy primitive fuzzed-out acid rock that didn’t have a lot to do with peace-and-love revolution vibe of the late ’60s. “n a musical level we had some problems” recalls singer-bassist Dickie Peterson. “The San Francisco scene was primarily folk-rock-based. We were a blues-based band… Blue Cheer was the name of a potent brand of LSD while also relating to the musical legacy that spawned the band. “It was named after acid and named after the fact that we liked the blues. The blues is generally thought of as sad music but there’s something called the jump blues and it has nothing to do with being sad. It has to do with party. That’s sort of where the name came from. And we did indulge in quite a bit of wsley’s Blue Cheer acid. Technically Blue Cheer was a one-hit wonder reaching No.

Jessie never told you he was perfect. You created that fantasy all on your own. Having a baby out of wedlock has nothing to do with what he can do for or how he can help me–and I need all the help that I can get! And furthermore show me a man who will refuse a free blowing or free sex–and Ill show you a punk. The way I see it the woman in Jessies case knew exactly what she was doing and had little concern for her child to make something that didnt concern the public public. I would never put my child in the public eye and forever labeled. She knew he was married… There two kids 11 and 13 brother and sister who live across the way. Well when Im in my yard all I here is this really bad rap that they are listning to. Tijeras NM USASome skinheads were bad. As a punk I was always taunted by them and threatened with violence. But I also knew lots of skins they were good friendly people. Skinheads were maligned and grouped as agitators because they really were all uniform. Alistair EdinburghIt is funny because I hear all this about how skinheads were violent and anti-everything in the 70s – and they may well have been at 25 I am too young to know – but the only ones I see now are the gay skinheads queuing to get into the Vauxhall Tavern.
