At last music is the winner

Beginning with iTunes the company is “making allof its digital repertoire available at a much higher sound qualitythan existing downloads and free of digital rights management (DRM)restrictions”. It’s nothing less than anarchy in the UK – and in every othercountry with broadband access. The other three major musiccorporations (Universal SonyBMG and Warner) are likely to be lividat the audacity of those punks over at EMI. While some industry pundits are predicting a domino effect amongthe other three majors that’s far from certain given the stubbornculture of protectionism that has arguably been their undoing sincethey went to war with the then-illegal music site Napster at theturn of the century. Since then the implementation of flawed and frustrating DRMlocks has made buying music online far less attractive than itshould have been. In effect DRM penalises all MP3 fans as de factocriminals. The resulting antagonism has probably exacerbated thepiracy pandemic the majors are so desperate to contain.

to settle in Paris with his new wife and child. After a few quiet years he began recording again first as a member of the barbed electro-pop duo Relaxed Muscle and then as a solo artist releasing his debut solo album Jarvis at the end of 2006. At the time of the release of his solo debut Cocker had been pursuing a music career for nearly 30 years. At the age of 15 in 1978 he formed. It was an auspicious beginning but… My Legendary Girlfriend kicked off the classic years of. They signed to Gift in 1992 where they soon hit upon their signature sleek sexy sound equal parts glam and post-punk. Babies proved to be their breakthrough to the big leagues leading to a contract with Island Records which released the band’s major-label debut His ‘n’ Hers in the spring of 1994. The album did well garnering good reviews and earning a Mercury Award nomination but they truly entered the big leagues in 1995 as the bracing Common People single became a smash hit — the kind of hit that defined an era. Its accompanying album Different Class was equally successful entering the charts at number one and going gold within its first week of release.

It was while visiting his bullfighter uncle there as a teenager that Tito decided to follow in his elder’s footsteps. Instead of carrying a cape though Tito was destined to carry a guitar into the arena. Tito’s first film appearance was fronting his earlier punk band the Plugz in Penelope Spheeris’ L. punk-u-mentary The Decline of Western Civilization. In the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez action flick From Dusk Till Dawn he played guitar and sang in a band called Titty Twister. Since then Tito has swerved in and out of the film industry staying loyal to the rock music that first placed him in the public eye.

K they didn't really grapple on the same stage – or even know that they were grappling. Avril was performing at the Fuse studios (across the street from the Garden) taping the music station's inaugural "Extra Sauce" performance series and Cornell was holding class downtown at the Fillmore. But despite separate locations the battle of the bands was apparent: Lavigne's show was terrific from start to close while Cornell's concert was – with the exception of a couple of choice songs – a yawn. Cornell is the better singer and the better writer but at the Fillmore his blues rock-laden set was slow and lacked vitality… K they didn't really grapple on the same stage – or even know that they were grappling. Cornell is the better singer and the better writer but at the Fillmore his blues rock-laden set was slow and lacked vitality. With slumped shoulders his mien onstage was one of defeat. Even his greatest song – "Black Hole Sun" (which he saved for the encore) – was a downer.

And maybe they don’t expect it but maybe we can make believers out of those who just came to see Talib and vice versa. Both openers tomorrow are currently exploring uncharted territory. With his previous band the piano-driven pop-punk group Something Corporate on permanent hiatus Tell is looking to find solo success. For the first time since his pre-SoCo days Tell said he has been able to showcase his own singing and song-writing on his new album You Can Hold Me Down. As the rhythm guitarist for Something Corporate Tell enjoyed all the success he garnered yet felt he wasn’t doing the thing that got him into music in the first place – writing and singing his own music he said. “After a while I missed writing and singing and doing all those things I had been doing” Tell said. “Even the guys in the band knew I would eventually leave to go do my own thing… “In many ways my classic rock tastes still play the biggest influence on me” Tell said in explanation of his style. “Bands like the Beatles and the Beach Boys and stuff like that. I actually need to stop listening to all other modern music and focus when I’m doing my own songwriting. “I’m kind of bored of the music I have now anyway” he added. “At this point now that I’m done recording I’m kind of on a music binge – looking for inspiration and just looking for more and more and more. The members of Sugarcult are also encountering new experiences. With the help of a cover of the Beatles’ hit “A Hard Day’s Night” the band has become a hit – in Japan.
