When the music is lame do it yourself
Prague Post – May 2, 2007
Many music fans agree that the 1990s started out with a burst of rock ’n’ roll creativity in the United Kingdom and the United States. But for many critics and fans the blissful rock soon melted into Britpop syrup while edgy experimental dance tracks sunk into a loud formulaic mash. According to Stereo Total’s Francoise Cactus the party soon ended in Berlin as well. “There was so much bad music — bad German techno bad German grunge bad German Britpop” she says. Finally in 1993 Cactus and Stereo Total co-founder Brezel Göring had had about all the lame pop and dance music they could take… trends points directly to a legendary Paris-based record shop and recording label. From 1981 to 1992 New Rose’s distribution of legends such as Alex Chilton Sky Saxon and Roky Erickson helped build a solid respect in France for the primitive spirit of the American garage sound. New Rose also promoted such ’80s punk upstarts as the Gun Club True West and the Divine Horsemen. So it’s no surprise that in 1989 Cactus began her own short three-CD stint on New Rose with the lively girl-punk group Les Lolitas. Asked how the ongoing spunk of punk continues to influence Stereo Total’s sound Cactus replies “We can’t help it we are funny people. We don’t like mainstream music — it’s too clean and pharmaceutical. ur music is exactly the music we want to listen to when we turn on the radio.

While in college it was a backdrop of pop-punk and emo bands such as Dashboard Confessional Hoobastank and Yellowcard. But now that Parker has a SoHo-suitable set of black duds his iPod's gone hipster too. The "Spider-Man 3" soundtrack out this week drops the mainstream acts and goes for post-punk bands such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs the Walkmen and the Killers. "We pitched an alternative soundtrack [to the filmmakers]" says Jordan Tappis executive album producer and co-owner of indie label Record Collection. "They were really open-minded to a change in the music portion of this whole franchise. They wanted something fresh really credible and cool. " With the exception of Chubby Checker's "The Twist" all the songs are exclusive to the soundtrack. "We reached out to all these bands told them about the movie and what we were looking for and gave them the opportunity to write songs about it" says Tappis. "This particular installment is about the battle between good and evil.

Mastodon and Against Me! got their tour off to a roaring start Tuesday night at Los Angeles’ Wiltern LG. Against Me! gave a rousing set with the bandmembers flinging a seemingly limitless supply of spit across the stage and frontman Tom Gabel wishing everyone a happy May Day. The punks in attendance streamed out after that band’s performance but the metalheads stayed for Mastodon’s challenging set of prog-metal mayhem. The head-scratching bill — rounded out by spiffily dressed indie squad Cursive and Denver experimental noise-rockers Planes Mistaken for Stars — hits San Francisco’s Warfield Wednesday night… “American Idol” veteran Constantine Maroulis’ role on the CBS soap “The Bold and the Beautiful” will begin airing May 15. Maroulis is playing a music producer named Constantine — what a coincidence — and will perform songs from his solo debut over the next several months on the daytime drama. Kelly is stepping up to help Virginia Tech heal.

With so many ups and downs in her personal life SHWBIZ TNIGHT can tell you some wonder whether this is the right time for Brit to be getting back into show business. FLEEMAN: The big question for Britney is will people think of her as a performer as a singer as a pop star and not just as a magazine star? This is going to be very difficult for her. She`s going to have to reestablish herself as a pop star. She`s going to have to gain some kind of credibility for her music if anyone is going to take her seriously. HAMMER: Britney Spears has sold almost 80 million albums world-wide and is the eighth best-selling female artist in U… You know you shaved your head. Why not show off the scalp be who you want to be. Maybe go a little punk rock. You know you have all these fans who are rooting for you as an under dog now. Don`t go just back to the old cheesy pop star you were. How about punk rock Britney? How about that? ANDERSN: How about that. I bet she wouldn`t call herself cheesy.
