Injuries in youth culture clash
Kathimerini – May 12, 2007
“The “emo” trend which appeared in other European countries several years ago has only recently gained ground in Greece. Youngsters claiming allegiance to the clan girls and boys alike typically dress in black with drainpipe jeans and heavy black makeup. They tend to listen to bands playing a strain of post-punk music featuring angry and retrospective lyrics such as Green Day and My Chemical Romance. The tendency of some emos in other countries to intentionally harm themselves generally minor cuts using razors does not appear to have been embraced in Greece. Nevertheless psychologists are concerned that this type of allegiance is not a particularly healthy one for youngsters. “This is the first time such an emotionally charged youth movement has appeared in Greece” clinical psychologist Eleni Kouloutzou told Kathimerini. “These children appear almost mournful but they have turned their anger in on themselves rather than against society they don’t believe in anything” she said.

Daily News & Analysis – May 12, 2007
Talvin describes his sound as a mix of trance and house and calls it ‘minimal tech’. Talvin’s fame as a club DJ can be gauged by the fact that his fans and revellers lined for hours to get inside and enjoy his music. Born in 1970 in London Talvin grew up listening to classical Indian music punk rock and break dance music. He took up to playing tabla at 15 under Pandit Laxman Singh. Working with various artists in the UK Talvin developed a new genre of music labelled as ‘Asian Underground’. In 1995 he opened the ‘Anokha Club’ at east London. He released his debut album-’K’ in 1998 and won the prestigious Mercury Music prize for it.
Alexkid – ‘Caracol’ LP (FComm)
Skiddle.com – May 12, 2007
He returned to Paris in the 80s and as a teenager began playing the guitar; joining several punk or funk groups whilst also organising concerts for himse f and his friends. He went to his first rave ‘Mozinor’ (infamous French rave) in 1992 – "The first time I went there I had no clue but Joey Beltram was maybe going to play. It was huge over 2000 people; from punks tomodels to My English teacher which was a bit of a surprise" – from here bought his first computer and started making music. Alexkid released his first EP ‘The Playground EP’ on F-CM ten years ago in 1997 after handing his first production effort to Laurent Garnier – a drum and bass track on cassette. "I used to go every Thursday to Laurent’s ‘wake up’ parties at The Rex – being fed as much Richie Hawtin as Ron Trent or Roni size – and one time gave him a tape of a track that I didn’t know what to think of I thought that maybe something could be better but he just loved it and signed it… He currently holds a bi-monthly residency at Weekend in Berlin and DJs regularly around Europe Brasil South Africa and Australia. Alongside Chloe and Tim Paris he also holds special ‘Ghetto Blaster’ nights in London Berlin and Paris. We love his experimanetal approach to dance music. Alex is fast becoming a legendary producer and this LP takes in the deepness electro acid house dub Detroit techno chill out and aural hypnosis. Highlights include the tech filth of ‘Nightshade’ the stripped back ‘Basic’ the hypnotic ‘rm’ the pulsing ‘Love Letters’ the Robert Hood sounding ‘Caracol’ the up for it ‘Mare Alta’ and the ambient ‘Back and Forth’. Also check the single ‘Love Letters’ including remixes from marC Romboy and Tim Paris that was released April 16th.
The mother of all concerts
Toronto Star – May 12, 2007
"Toronto is ideally suited to Mamapalooza" she said. "It’s an easy-access city for families with kids it’s liberal-minded and family-friendly and the cultural mix is so rich ? everyone is wide-eyed about everyone else. "For 50-year-old mother of four Joy Rose who started the Mamapalooza ball rolling in 2002 in the belief that if people made more time for music dancing and art they’d be less inclined to make war the annual festival is "a celebration of the rearing momhead that has been with us throughout history. "My idea was to create stages for women who had stepped away from their passion women of a certain age with a certain look women who were no longer welcome in the music industry ? professionals and semi-professionals who wanted to keep their music going now that their children are grown. "And my hope is that it will grow into a women-owned business that will support itself and help careers blossom" added Rose who won’t be at the Toronto Mamapalooza. That’s exactly what former Toronto punk rocker Cynthia Ross hopes will happen with the reformed B-Girls once darlings of the city’s crash-and-burn culture and former touring mates of The Clash no less. With a son and a daughter in their 20s Ross and her erstwhile bandmate Zenya now a yoga instructor have started playing again partly in response to resurging interest in pre-grunge Toronto rock and power pop… "My idea was to create stages for women who had stepped away from their passion women of a certain age with a certain look women who were no longer welcome in the music industry ? professionals and semi-professionals who wanted to keep their music going now that their children are grown. "I was in a club in Brooklyn a month ago and they were playing our records along with The Diodes and Teenage Head ? all Toronto bands" she said. "And apparently we’re huge in Japan as well.
Down in Albion
Aversion – May 12, 2007
While all those angles have dominated the Babyshambles narrative since before the band even got off the ground they?re secondary to the real story: Doherty?s music. With the long-awaited release of Babyshambles? debut Down in Albion in the United States Doherty delivers a strong reminder about why he?s on the pop-cultural radar to begin with. It?s the rock ? not pipes and rocks ? that?s made his enthusiasm for contraband so newsworthy and with a debut like this album under his belt Doherty cuts through the mountains of drug-bust press-clippings and message-board shit-talk to remind us about the music. Dropping the punked-up hysteria of The Libertines for a more laid-back sound Babyshambles delivers one of the most gloriously shambled and sleazy albums to come out of the United Kingdom since the Stones traded their love for switchblades and Satanism in for a spot on the disco bandwagaon. Although Down in Albion doesn?t eclipse either of The Libertines? two gems it places Doherty?s new act among the more interesting acts in Britain?s budding rock revival. Doherty maintains the free-and-sleazy chops that made The Libertines nouveau-punk mainstays but drops the aggression. The result is an album chalk full of the rambunctious arrangements that teeter on the edge of unschooled oblivion only to rescue listeners at the last moment… Dropping the punked-up hysteria of The Libertines for a more laid-back sound Babyshambles delivers one of the most gloriously shambled and sleazy albums to come out of the United Kingdom since the Stones traded their love for switchblades and Satanism in for a spot on the disco bandwagaon. The result is an album chalk full of the rambunctious arrangements that teeter on the edge of unschooled oblivion only to rescue listeners at the last moment. Doherty?s laid-back approach takes some of the urgency from his glory days with The Libertines but still yields more than its share of compelling tracks. Lead single ?Fuck Forever? takes the smarmy feel of American roadhouse rock and grafts it to a mid-tempo chaos jam that either wallows or exalts in Doherty?s shambles-as-art approach to songwriting. ?8 Dead Boys? is a drunken rendition of hard-edged rock that tilts heavily toward garage distractions while ?Pipedown? comes closest to matching The Libertines? poise and pointed majesty.
