Best Time to Be Young in the 20th Century
San Francisco Chronicle – Jun 28, 2007
I was born in the early 70s so my ‘growing up’ decade was the 80s. The 80s were full of shameful horrible political situations (Reagan North Thatcher) but the music was Awesome. I’m still stuck on new wave college rock goth and punk music from that era. So I guess for me the 80s was the best though if I had to pick a second it might be the 70s or the 20s; Mick makes some strong arguments here. Posted By: stikfa | June 28 2007 at 01:28 PMtigereyes: I’d love for you to be right but how do you square this supposed increased social consciousness with youth’s abysmal voting numbers? In some ways you’re right no question such as acceptance of gays and other minorities. But too many of this generation seem to view voting as irrelevant which is in part how we end up with the most environmentally disastrous administration (and disastrous in numerous other ways) ever in this age of increased environmental awareness. And for 8 years not 4.

Up on stage the Fratellis grin down at the fans who have made a pilgrimage from their home town to see them. Fraggle-haired Jon Lawler at the mic Barry Wallace pumping bulk-armed notes from his bass and Gordon “Mince” McCory pounding the drums with the cartoon exuberance of Animal from the Muppets. It’s a throwback to the power-punk of the 1970s but there’s no denying its potency. The drunken Glaswegians throw their arms around me and what the heck I am joining in. Hunching conspiratorially over his whisky and Coke he says: “We’re a lot more intelligent than people give us credit for. We’ve had a hard time over those da-da-dah choruses… “We just seem to get all the good things” nods Lawler. “Maybe the secret is that we don’t ask for anything. We never even sent a demo out to anyone in the music industry. We just got a record deal. And then the other day Pete Townshend got up on stage with us in a black suit and shades and started playing one of our songs. He’s a hero and he jumped about did windmills and I just howled. But Lawler is aware that the public’s attention span is shorter than it was in the days when Townshend was making a splash with the Who.

“I think Elijah’s a very good actor though. If he can play a hobbit then he should be able to play me” Pop said. Rumours have been circulating about the possibility of a biopic on the life of the punk icon. [Published: 28-Jun-2007] Search.

Kusturica’s extraordinary visual imagination. And while this is the first time he has directed onstage his movie experience of working with crowds most memorably in noisy village wedding parties has evidently served him well. The opera’s music is also no stranger to him. For the past 20 years between making movies Mr. Kusturica has played guitar in a punk and techno rock group called the No Smoking rchestra. For this occasion the 10-man band shares the pit of the Bastille pera with the Garbage Serbian Philharmonia which despite its bizarre name uses classical music instruments. And some time in the fall they will own a live recording from the band’s coming tour. The band’s label New York’s Matador Records hopes that an extra dose of songs _ some available now and some when the cool weather returns _ will help stem the flow of illegal copies of the new album and drum up a bit of extra revenue. Call it the summer of promotional love for music fans as record labels step up already aggressive campaigns to lure consumers with unique downloads bonus videos special vinyl versions and music that hasn’t been recorded yet. “The people who go out to the record stores on the first day of a release deserve something extra” said Paul Cardillo who handles sales.

It’s a mellow intimate thick sing-songwriter vibe” he said. Tizzard pulled on the influences of Nick Drake and Bob Dylan for his debut solo release Quiet Story House An Introduction. But a more subtle influence that will always impact his music is punk. “When I was growing up one of the first musical influences that really hit me like big time and made me really excited about music was punk rock” he said listing bands like Stiff Little Fingers Motorhead The Clash Minor Threat and the Dead Kennedys as perennial favourites. “It got me really excited as a teenager especially being 13 or 14 years old and full of teen angst; it was sort of a great outlet. He played in a few punk bands in his early years before moving into the mainstream rock he’s known for today. While the bass is his main instrument of choice Tizzard dabbles in many other musical areas.
