“I’m going to try to write some X stuff with Exene. Maybe we’ll get around to it. Doe’s solo material has generally steered away from punk drifting more toward the Americana sound of X’s old side project The Knitters. “The Knitters didn’t go there without help” he says of that band. “There were a lot of bands that were already involved in roots country what was then called cowpunk which was a really unfortunate label. Rank & File Green on Red Tex and the Horseheads The Blasters and then the rockabilly stuff before that. At least at this point it has a context… At least at this point it has a context. People who listened to alt-country also listen to the real deal country-western so they know where it comes from. Although Doe made his name in the punk rock scene he says “Nowaways punk rock is a little less adventurous. That’s left to the indie bands and singer-songwriters and stuff. But on the other hand there is still a healthy underground punk rock world like what you see on the beginning half of the Warped Tour. … Jones Addresses Schism With Cam’ron – News Story | Music…
MTV.com – Jul 19, 2007
textContenturl:window. href} {button:true} ); NEW YORK — When Jim Jones reached out to Hot 97 radio personality Miss Info back in May and went on the record about the Diplomats putting crew head Cam’ron “on punishment” as Jones put it then he stunned fans and music industry insiders alike. The two had long been rumored to be at odds — either over money or Jones’ growing stardom according to the whisperings — but it was the first time anyone inside the camp had said anything publicly about the incident (see “Mixtape Monday: Beanie’s Staying With Jay-Z; Cam’ron Vs. Jim Jones In Dipset Bust-Up?”). In the weeks since though Jones and the rest of the Diplomats including Cam have been quiet in addressing what exactly was the source of the rift between the two and why it was put on blast. Dipset members bypassed the incident in interviews as just a minor ruffle among the top ranks of the group… We might just pop up together and slap fire out of one of you. So don’t ever forget that. What I can do what me and Cam could do toward each other you punks can’t do. So if one of you punks get out of line I’m still gonna handle you. You understand me? Don’t get the family business twisted. You will get handled hardbody. It’s been a tough ‘07 for Jones so far with his beefing with Cam and the passing of his artist Stack Bundles (see.
Music retailer fights CD downturn
BBC News – Jul 19, 2007
If all goes according to plan the 5000 sq-ft Rough Trade East on Dray Walk just off Brick Lane will start trading on Friday 20 July. But just a few days before the scheduled opening the only sight to quicken the pulse of music fans is the giant album covers that block out the shopfront keeping prying eyes at bay. Inside actual records are nowhere to be seen as construction workers run around trying to make an impression on a cavernous space that still betrays its industrial origins. Stephen Godfroy director of Rough Trade Retail is unfazed by the disarray… “We’ll definitely be opening on Friday” he says. “I’m not sure what time on Friday but we’ll be open. Punk pastThe new store represents a huge leap of faith for a company that forged its reputation in the white heat of the punk years.
Music greats join Hall of Fame
NEWS.com.au – Jul 19, 2007
Six acts were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame at a gala ceremony and concert in Melbourne which will be broadcast on Foxtel’s VH1 channel at 7. Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns added spark to the evening with a pre-recorded introduction to punk trailblazers Radio Birdman while a swag of artists performed alongside other inductees. For a ceremony established to ensure those who paved the way for today’s artists are given appropriate credit the beneficiaries showed just gratitude. While Marcia Hines is now better known as the nice judge on Australian Idol she proved to still be the queen of Australian disco with a performance alongside Sneaky Sound System singer Connie Francis. Hines who turns 54 on Friday was inducted into the Hall of Fame by entertainment industry legend Harry M Miller producer of the stage production of Hair in which she starred as a 16-year-old. ARIA Award winners The Waifs performed the song I Remember You in tribute to country music legend Frank Ifield.
Music Preview: Boxstep’s Graf finds new voice in The 9th Ward
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Jul 19, 2007
Graf says he’s leaving his band days behind at least for now and focusing on his new Blackberry Studios in Lawrenceville and his latest “project” — The 9th Ward. The range of experience spans from an “18-year-old guitar phenom” to “a 49-year-old punk rock hippie on mandolin. The 9th Ward which played its first gig at the Three Rivers Arts Festival issues its nine-song self-titled debut Friday at the Rex. It’s a raunchy bluesy change of pace for Graf known for his richly textured indie-pop. “The reference points sonically” he says “are a little psychedelic which is a lot of fun. It references a lot of records that when I was a really young child my dad had lying around — The Who Zeppelin Dylan the Kinks… And everything has been done before. Just like me they’re mining the past for their ideas. The hottest thing in music right now is a kid combining other people’s songs on laptop.
