Hit the north
Guardian Unlimited – Jul 28, 2007
Photo: Truls Brekke If Glastonbury has become the Bluewater shopping centre of live music events then Norway’s Bukta festival is the funky little boutique tucked into a side street that you discover by happy accident. No mobile charging zones healing fields Banksy installations or welly oneupmanship. Just a stage plonked on the edge of a fjord in what is normally a picnic area nothing but water and snow capped mountains behind it and three days of music. Bukta takes place 300 miles inside the arctic circle in Tromsø frequently described as “a sleepy little town” – except for one weekend in July when the whole place goes endearingly nuts. This is famously the land of the midnight sun and when it never gets dark it’s easy to forget about sleep… Yes Bukta 2007 was all about The Stooges. You’d hear it on the streets in the pubs on the bus – “Iggy and the Stooges are coming to Bukta!” 18 other bands played this year but for many people that just meant 18 reasons to drink before the main event. Everybody – the old rockers the young punks the pop fans who know Iggy from his chart hits over the years – everybody wanted to see this sexagenarian anti-hero this one-man festival take the Bukta stage. Bukta is unashamedly all about the rock although it attempts to stretch the boundaries; day one was kicked off by local heroes Ska Patrol (”Jamaica is an island. Tromsø is an island.
Tokyo Rose puts frathouse fun back in music
phillyBurbs.com – Jul 28, 2007
We’re having more fun than we’ve ever had with this band. It shows throughout “The Promise in Compromise” which will drop Tuesday. The material from the disc which will be showcased Sunday at the Trocadero is comprised of hook-laden pop-punk that is clever and upbeat. “Our last one was dark. We went back to what it was like in the earlier days of this band and made more fun music. We want the kids to come out and enjoy the lighter stuff… “Our last one was dark. We went back to what it was like in the earlier days of this band and made more fun music. We want the kids to come out and enjoy the lighter stuff. We’re comfortable with the new stuff which is very energetic. It reflects what we do live. Tokyo Rose appears Sunday at the Trocadero 10th & Arch streets Philadelphia.
Music Review: Before Their Eyes “Before Their Eyes”
The Trades – Jul 28, 2007
In fact infinitesimal would be a more accurate adjective. And yet the self-titled debut from Before Their Eyes presents a pleasing amalgamation of pop punk and hardcorethat I found appealing. This new Ohio band gets its name from.
Review: Where’s the old Ryan Adams?
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Jul 28, 2007
I should be thankful that Ryan Adams is sober. That he’s alive at all and still making fantastic music and putting on shows. He could have very easily overdosed and joined that “stupid club.

Your booty is on his to-do list

Right now he’s in Spain where he’s playing shows with Nettle a sort of North African-inspired electronic dealie that for the past three years he’s been working with on the side. After wrapping up a few more Scandinavian dates with the band the Brooklyn-based artist has plans to finish up an album with Matt Shadetek record a duo project with Andy Moor (guitarist of the Dutch punk band The Ex) release Uproot (a 30-track DJ mix deconstructing the spacious textures of dubstep) and continue operating his own label Soot Records. In addition every week Clayton produces his radio show Mudd Up! on freeform radio station WFMU; bantering with New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones mixing tropical beats with Buenos Aires cumbia DJ Sonido Martines and hosting a live beat-broken set from Drop the Lime. The nap will just have to wait. Clayton’s methodical madness seems to flourish from one border-crossing genre-transmutating instinct: Bring sounds together to bring people together. "We’re making things related to grime and dubstep two genres that are interesting but not working that well in the US; we want to take influences from these themes and make them relevant to New York" Clayton says specifically regarding his project with Shadetek… New York has its own MC-driven sound; it’s a local thing. If you play [grime or dubstep] in New York people are not going to dance: ‘It’s not minimal’; ‘It’s dull. ‘ They’re not as much the music nerds as you’d find in London. Let’s make something that makes sense here. " For Clayton exposing new sounds to fresh ears is a more seductive than didactic measure: "As a DJ it’s a communal thing-how far you can take people without losing them completely. Take them into a comfort zone and take them out so the unfamiliar becomes the familiar. " Between his stints in New York and Europe Clayton’s Saturday performance in Boston is a one-off show.
