There were countless mohawkspierced body parts and tattoos. Those can qualify as punk too. Oh yeah there was also the music. The day included sets fromIrish-flavored fan favorites Flogging Molly and venerable punk vetsBad Religion. Both delivered 30 minutes of refreshing visceral andexciting music. However there were more corporate sponsors on site than a NASCARrace making Warped a massive cesspool of consumerism.

Which makes Paris sound just like Calcutta but Emmanuelle also sees in the Calcutta rock scene business potential. “It will take time but it will happen” she says. “For the first time the city is identifying with original rock music as New Delhi and Mumbai did some years back. With the kind of talent available in Calcutta and the Northeast there is a tremendous scope for rock festivals and concerts just waiting to be developed” says Alex a tabla player who has shown interest in getting the concert scene going. “A movement to promote original rock in Calcutta is needed with either a recording label or the media or some corporate house supporting it. They need to be convinced that there is a huge market of original rock music in the city” Alex adds. He is impressed by young people from as far as Durgapur and Asansol who know more about rock than him… He also said that the drums needed cleaning” says Souvik Chakravarti of the Hobos (acronym for the Hedonism Obsessed Bunch of Shamans. They stress on the hedonism part more than the shamanism they claim). Supersonics play emo and garage rock with influences of grunge and punk rock bands. Cassini’s Division labelled an alternative rock outfit plays a combination of nu-metal emo and Goth pop. The Hobos who practise in a tiny pad in Dum Dum Park play progressive experimental rock. It makes life tough.

MUSIC MYTHS AND LEGEND BY MARTIN VENGADESAN. THERE are few groups in the annals of rock music that are as celebrated for being a cradle of talent as The Yardbirds. In retrospect it does seem unfair that a classic British blues band of the 1960s is known more for having given the world first Eric Clapton then Jeff Beck and then Jimmy Page rather than for majestic singles like Shapes of Things Heartful of Soul and the pseudo-Gregorian chant classic Still I’m Sad. It is one lesser known legacy of The Yardbirds that I’m examining today although in the case every link in the chain had been replaced by the time this Yardbirds offshoot fully bloomed. I’m talking about Renaissance… Ironically at one point in the mid-1970s the Relfs and McCarty decided to reform. Taking the name Illusion (from its second album) it cut two more albums but tragically Keith Relf died in an electrocution accident just before the group got started. Unfortunately by the late 1970s punk happened and Renaissance found itself challenged to evolve. The new direction seen on Azure D’Or (1979) and Camera Camera (1981) was generally disastrous as synthesisers and more lead vocals by Camp were definitely not what the fans wanted. As suddenly as they’d risen to fame Renaissance split and while the late 1990s saw the multi-talented Roy Wood (of The Move ELO and Wizzard fame) briefly jump aboard Haslam’s ship the only recorded comeback album Tuscany (2001) was followed by Haslam’s announcement that there would never ever be another Renaissance. Given the number of times the group has risen from the dead I wonder if she actually believes her own words!
