Rock music has dished up many infamous rivalries where fans areexpected to commit to one group or join the enemy. Beatles v Stonesis the greatest of all. In Australia 1970s music fans had tochoose between the flamboyant rock of Skyhooks and the satin-lacedsugar pop of Sherbet. But England’s great punk rivalry between the Clash and the SexPistols spawned in a hotbed of social unrest was probably thefiercest of all. Julian Temple was a young filmmaker caught up inthe middle of all this. He initially chose the Clash to be thesubject of his first documentary but after singer Joe Strummerwho died five years ago became stand-offish he went with thePistols. It is not a decision he regrets as The Great Rock’n'RollSwindle and the recent follow-up on the band The Filthand the Fury are considered two of rock’s seminaldocumentaries.

A Glimpse Into Harmonix’s Punk-Rock Design Process
Wired News – Sep 14, 2007
Q: How do you know when a game developer is pressed for office space?A: When they move in the middle of beta. This past July one week after their music game Rock Band won several best of show awards at E3 the staff of game developer Harmonix had all flown back to their native Boston and the whole company was in full-on crunch mode. The drop-deadline for their show-stealing game was just a couple months. Rock Band had a comfortably long beta period. But complicating matters was the fact that the creators of the multimillion-selling Guitar Hero had grown so quickly that they needed a new larger office — immediately. So Harmonix bit the bullet and moved the whole company while Rock Band was in the most critical stage of its development… In the next day’s build the hopos are a little larger the staff lines much brighter. “My guess is we’ll continue to argue about them and try out different things for the next few weeks” said vice president Greg LoPiccolo. LoPiccolo and sound designer Brosius are renowned among music geeks for their work with the 1990s alt-rock act Tribe and among gamer geeks for their work on cult hits like Thief and System Shock. As two of the top people at Harmonix they’ve brought together their two loves. “For me the next creative opportunity is to actually give people the increasing ability to improvise and compose and make meaningfully musical things happen of their own accord” says LoPiccolo. “It’s an incredibly hard design problem that we’ve just scratched the surface of. CEO Alex Rigopulos is just as excited but cautions that free-form music games might be a long way off.

Yoakam and Anderson didn’t just play country clubs they played the same nightclubs that punk and post-punk rock bands like X the Dead Kennedys. What Yoakam had in common with rock bands like X the Blasters and Los Angeles was similar musical influences; they all drew from ’50s rock & roll and country. In comparison to the polished music coming out of Nashville Yoakam’s stripped-down direct revivalism seemed radical. The cowpunks as they were called that attended Yoakam’s shows provided an invaluable support for his fledgling career… What Yoakam had in common with rock bands like X the Blasters and Los Angeles was similar musical influences; they all drew from ’50s rock & roll and country. A NEW SOUND that didn’t exist before he came along. And when you are a guitar player that brings something new and innovative that puts you in a very unique class with others such as Jimmy Page Jeff Beck Keith Richards etc. Kurt had an ability to write catchy pop punk songs that ALSO got plenty of radio airplay! Nirvana’s music towards the end became very dark and depressing in my opinion. I’m not being mocking in any way but one of Kurt’s last songs he recorded was for the “Beavis and Butthead” soundtrack entltled: “I Hate Myself I Want To Die.
