nz readers have their say about the Big Day Out 2007 music festival. Feedback:Was it just me or did the Violent Femmes sound really quiet? Anyway I had great fun at their gig. Other highlights were The Veils Little Birdy Tool and The Vines. First time I’ve been in about 10 years – loved it!-KimI have been going to the BDO since ’94. I have been every year save a couple while I was away on my OE… My Chemical Romance are NOT emo. In fact the band has openly come out and said they are not emo. As a fan of many punk and pop bands I cringe everytime I hear the word “emo” being used by people who actually have no comprehension of what “emo” actually is. -James PaulEveryone who missed That 1 One guy are gunna be kicking themselves for years to come. Best act I saw in the boiler room all day except for Peaches of course but that just goes without saying doesn’t it?-Samantha BangI’ve noticed through the years that main stage speaker stacks have steadily been pared back. This year there was only one column visible through the scrim. The main stage acts were not clearly audible from halfway down the field during the day.

From their winnings they recorded their first three demo tapes the “Red” “Yellow” and “Orange” tapes and their first independent album “Under Feet Like Ours. ” This was later re-released under Tegan and Sara which they are now known for. “Each one has gone to another level and we believe this fifth one is yet another level. It may be some of the best stuff we ever put out. DeMarcus and LeVox are second cousins who grew up playing music together. DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992 and earned his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West. He persuaded his cousin to quit his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and join him in Nashville five years later. The two linked up with Oklahoma native Rooney when their regular guitarist couldn’t make a gig and they’ve been together ever since. “We’ve stayed as tight as we can on the road… DeMarcus says they don’t pay attention to what critics think. But they do care what the industry and old guard institutions like the Grand Ole Opry think and it worries them. “I think sometimes they think of us as young punk kids that don’t have appreciation for Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams Sr. and people like that and it blows my mind because those are the people we grew up on” DeMarcus says. “But we wanted to leave our mark and our unique impression upon the industry. “I think the tide is turning a little bit in country music and I’m proud to say we’re part of paving the way for artists to do something a little more to be a little edgier and do something outside the box. “By JOHN GEROME © MMVII The Associated Press.
A Night at the Ritz
PopMatters – Sep 25, 2007
Scott Masson the former cubicle-jockey turned indie-pop troubadour had not only rounded up an extremely tight four-piece but also had developed a song writing style that truly brought out the best parts of the New Pornographers Belle & Sebastian and even a bit of the Postal Service. Q&A was an end-to-end burner filled with office-gossip lyrics and sly Prince allusions. Needless to say it was a burst of joyous energy at a time when so many rock groups were focused on making “serious” music. Shortly thereafter the band became serious about their musical endeavors. Signed to Scratchie Records (the label owned by Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger and ex-Smashing Pumpkin James Iha) the group set out on making the best pop album of all time. So unsurprisingly they culled a lot of tracks from Q&A. Yet where that album was flawlessly sequenced A Night at the Ritz feels a bit jumbled and some of their re-worked numbers though still incredible lose a bit of the edge that made them so intriguing in the first place… Truth be told there are some little presentational elements that Office by-passed on their way to the Ritz. The new “Wound Up” adds a great new keyboard countermelody that fleshes out the original melody just as well. Each word is sung with total conviction and the group’s multi-part vocal harmonies simply tip the scale into the feel-good stratosphere. Obviously a good helping of Q&A‘s songs are left off of Ritz (see: ballads and the aforementioned Prince homages ["Busy With Other Things"]) but some of the new numbers more than make up for it. “The Ritz” is the song that people will now refer to when they use the adjective “stop-start rock” and “Suburban Perfume” is a sweet if somewhat unspectacular closer. Yet all bets are off when “Plus Minus Fairytale” shows up halfway through the set eviscerating everything in its path.

” But she also name-checks Siouxsie Sioux the suburban English girl who rose up from Sex Pistols fandom during the late ’70s to front Siouxsie and the Banshees that unique trio of assault and strings punk and poise. Mantaray Siouxsie’s blazing solo debut earns those accolades with no trace of fatigue padding or confusion as on-it and of-the-moment as Justin Timberlake. Working with producers Steve Evans and Charlie Jones it preserves her classic black-and-white sonic barrage—what her Banshees work always mounted whatever the style—this time accomplished with pop-forward guitars occasional horns and strings and extraordinarily subtle electronicism. “If It Doesn’t Kill You” and “Into a Swan” alternately slow up or rock out but they’re part of one surpassingly deliberate yet fast-moving piece. A ballad like the climactic “Heaven and Alchemy” edges Siouxsie toward Fiona Appledom but she never really divas out and is just as likely to go completely metal—a constantly threatened balance rough yet schooled aggressive yet considered… “If It Doesn’t Kill You” and “Into a Swan” alternately slow up or rock out but they’re part of one surpassingly deliberate yet fast-moving piece. A ballad like the climactic “Heaven and Alchemy” edges Siouxsie toward Fiona Appledom but she never really divas out and is just as likely to go completely metal—a constantly threatened balance rough yet schooled aggressive yet considered. Of course a certain goth quality colors the music. But it’s the durable non-gauzy hardwired Gothicism of literature architecture or challenging relationships. “Don’t be gloomy” Siouxsie counsels at one point. In the uneasily soulful world of Mantaray such a pose would be far too simple.
