“But then I realized none of us can harmonize that well with each other. Basically we try to sound like The Byrds but we end up sounding more like The Pogues.

Thepresentation of Brash listening to a recorded Ronald Reaganspeech – read Lyndee-Jane Rutherford in an adapted rubberReagan mask – actually received a round of applause onThursday night. Figures rush around in the backgroundbetween scenes circulating among frames of walls partlycovered by translucent white material – amusingly suggestiveof the figurative paper walls the compartmentaliseconspiracies everywhere. Stabs of punk music that punctuatethe changes also keep up the energy and seem appropriate tothe rule-breaking young turks who power thecampaign. Having followed the last few year of politicsand the release of Hager’s book I’m probably not one to beshocked by any of the revelations in the play or galvanisedinto action. New electoral laws are currently underconsideration with many of the games depicted in the playare being played on both sides of that. But it wassomething of a revelation for the political junkie in me tohave the whole thing laid out – the inner workings of amodern political campaign from the slick to the shamelessto the proably illegal – and with enough entertainment andvariety to keep my attention. The politics told as a storygiven flesh in theatrical form hits home all themore.

“I always thought ‘Why can’t I write a song from the point of view of a man or a criminal or an old woman?’ Obviously some of it comes from personal things but it’s so much more fun when a concept or idea pops into my head and then I pull on it and out comes this thing that I never expected. ” Spektor was born in Moscow back in the days before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The only daughter of a musically inclined family — her mother taught music while her dad was a violinist and a photographer — young Regina began her piano lessons at 6 studying and practicing on a Petrof piano given to her mother by her grandfather. In 1989 soon after Mikhail Gorbachev began his policy of perestroika she and her parents immigrated to the Bronx New York City. While leaving the Soviet Union was cause for celebration it was understood that once the Spektors arrived in America Regina would no longer be able to study music. “We had to sell the piano because we weren’t allowed to bring anything foreign-made out of Russia” she says. “It was considered Soviet property… In March she headed for London to continue recording with Raphael. “I don’t have an overall sound” she explains. “I tend to think of each song as its own little world so one song can be a complete punk song while another could be a chamber ensemble with strings. It’s more fun that way because I never have to do the same thing over and over again. ” After wrapping the sessions Raphael played Soviet Kitsch to the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas who was so impressed he invited Regina to join his band on their sold-out North American tour. Since she was still an unsigned artist Spektor had to cover all of her own expenses from cross-country airfares to nightly hotel stays. Spektor reckons the experience to have been well worth the cost.

” The non-stop barrage that also included Beautiful Girls their cover of Roy Orbison’s Oh Pretty Woman and Panama another from hit album 1984 (released in 1984) filled the arena with hard rock energy rarely generated since well the band’s previous forays. Memorable moments: The absence of bass player Michael Anthony was obvious but Wolfgang missed nary a beat neither on bass or background vocals. In fact he had his own rock star moments standing at the stage’s crest to strike the opening notes of Runnin’ with the Devil and slapping hands with crowd members while stalking the runway during Atomic Punk. (Also not mentioned: Sammy Hagar who served as lead vocalist after Roth set to tour with Anthony this fall. Those two attended the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. )He and his father had a couple touching moments including a smooch after Dance the Night Away and Eddie sliding across the stage on his knees — while playing Little Guitars— and coming to a stop at Wolfgang’s feet. Eddie and Roth also had a good rapport and the two slapped hands after Jump.
