For Sena the lead singer of an all-girl Muslim punk band called Secret Trial Five – the name given to five detained Muslims in Canada – raising awareness of injustices against Muslims is the point of Taqwacore:”Muslims have a lot to be angry about. But we need to get more of them angry about what is going on. Punk music is a way to do that. Why you should care: Like her somewhat tamer American counterpart Blondie’s Debbie Harry Siouxsie is still a force in both fashion and music at 50 years old. T-shirts of Siouxsie’s face have been an edgy style accessory for at least two decades. Her sonic influence stretches from punk to goth to rock to electronic music; UK dance stars Basement Jaxx even featured her on their album “Kish Kash. ” She’s perpetually being copied yet she still remains an original. Verdict: Unlike its deadly namesake “Mantaray” doesn’t really deliver much sting. Siouxsie almost sets herself up for failure when she sings “ho hum drone zone” on “Drone Zone” as it strikes as literal rather than ironic. But in an age of software-tuned vocals it’s still refreshing to hear Siouxsie continue to achieve individuality with her haunting tones which can go from lovely to deliciously evil in the blink of a heavily mascara-ed eye.

Soon Pearl Jam outsold. Pearl Jam’s audience continued to grow during 1992 thanks to a series of radio and MTV hits as well as successful appearances on the second Lollapalooza tour and the Singles soundtrack (Stone Gossard also embarked on a side project called Brad which released the album Shame in early 1993). Despite their status as rock & roll superstars the band refused to succumb to the accepted conventions of the music industry. The group refused to release any videos or singles from their second album 1993′s Vs. Nevertheless it was another multi-platinum success debuting at number one and selling nearly a million copies in its first week of release.

Metal:Rhino has put together one of the most symbolic metal releases ever: The Heavy Metal Box a limited-edition set that has four CDs but better yet comes in a faux amplifier box with a Marshall knob that turns up to 11. Fitting for the nod to Spinal Tap the package also features a song by the band in addition to a litany of classics by Black Sabbath Iron Maiden and Slayer. While its packaging pales in comparison Megadeth’s Warchest is even more extensive as it too has four CDs but tosses in a DVD as well.
