Kate Nash makes splash in US
Denver Post – Feb 4, 2008
She’s more comfortable calling herself a punk. “I’m definitely not a poet” she said. “I’ve always identified more with punk music in the way they just say how they feel and that’s it. When I first started writing I thought ‘I have a different take on all this. ‘ And that’s what I love about punk rock. You have something to say and you say it. “When you look at punk music the Buzzcocks in particular their lyrics are cute and heartfelt and honest and they say stuff like ‘I’m in love again… ‘ And that’s what I love about punk rock. You have something to say and you say it. “When you look at punk music the Buzzcocks in particular their lyrics are cute and heartfelt and honest and they say stuff like ‘I’m in love again. ‘ It’s very simple and a lot of people could call the lyrics simplistic or hardly deep or meaningful or lacking poetry or eloquence. But if you strip it down to what it’s about — the feeling — simplicity is best when saying how you feel and making that connection with the people listening to your music. Billy Bragg and Regina Spektor are also really amazing in how they touch people. ” Nash’s philosophy about simplicity and true feeling gives her confidence in tackling the American market — an intimidating task for any British artist coming stateside.

It’s probably more accurate to say the New York and London scenes are two sides of the same coin; each inspired the other with a rivalry of one-upmanship. The New York stirrings came first but it was the younger more fashion-conscious London movement that captured the attention and outrage of the world. One point is indisputable: punk rock lives. Often fast and always loud and adventurous it started as a crucial strike against an increasingly bloated music industry and a stripping-down of rock music to its barest essentials–three chords and the truth indeed; it has survived three decades of rabid co-opting by Madison Avenue owing to the startling simplicity innovation and nerve of its discography. Several generations of rebellion-seeking teenagers have learned to play guitar bass and drums with the Ramones the Sex Pistols and the Clash–punk’s most recognizable exponents–and many have gone on to form influential contemporary groups of their own (e. Nirvana Rancid Green Day).

Black Lips promise fear mayhem panic at tonight’s show in Omaha
Daily Nebraskan – Feb 26, 2008
Omaha is a cold dark coke town in the middle of America where the bands all tap-dance and twang because they feel like it. The Black Lips are a product of Hotlanta’s heat sweat and beer-soaked underground. The band plays its own brand of garage-punk music that’s as much early Beatles as it is Willie Nelson as it is the Sex Pistols. The four-tet will visit Omaha tonight at 9 for a performance at the Waiting Room with Quintron & Miss Pussycat and Brimstone Howl. “We’re influenced by a lot of 1960s American underground rock” said Cole Alexander guitarist and one of the founding members of the Black Lips. ” We use blues country-western punk and rock. We try to mix the oldies and punk rock… ” The Black Lips has been a band for eight years and has always done its own thing on its own terms. The band’s balls-out live show has been known to result in the members pissing on vomiting on and making out with each other. This coupled with the band’s self-described flower punk music has led many to find them in bad taste. “We had to attack a bunch of people in the audience I had to beat a guy up. we had a mariachi band on stage other guys were fighting each other” said Jared Swilley bassist singer and one of the founding members of the Black Lips.
