On the Beat: David Menconi on music
News & Observer – May 6, 2008
The upside was that we got to hear some old classic “brown sound” VH that we would have never heard performed with Sammy — songs like “So This Is Love?” “Romeo Delight” “Little Dreamer” (my personal fav of the night) “Atomic Punk” “Mean Street” “And the Cradle Will Rock. ” I couldn’t help wishing we could have heard those tunes played between the years 1985 to 2007. But as Dave said last night “Better late than never. Dave was in good form. He looked and acted liked he was 15 years younger onstage… Get with it Raleigh. PS the Van Halen show had an interpreter signing for deaf fans. The sound could have been a lot better but a nice effort from the boys. But my general impression is their running out of gas and ready to pack it in. They just didn’t seem to be in sync to me on certain songs.

This time Heineken shares a good commercial
MSNBC – May 6, 2008
I didn’t drink the swill before the commercial and definitely won’t now. Dave Columbus OH (Sent Tuesday May 06 2008 12:09 PM) The visuals and storyline of the ad are interesting but the music is too loud (it dominates the video). Also Heineken IS (IMHO) pretty crappy beer and this ad just reinforces my impression that the people in their ads are beer-idiots. And while I like the occasional micro-brew the mass-market beers I like are cold-filtered. I’m not being paid to post this message so you can figure out which ones on your own… Christine Boca Raton FL (Sent Thursday May 08 2008 1:13 PM) I honestly found the last commercial amusing but as a designer who works with ads it didn’t fit the bill for a beer commercial. It also felt like a Daft Punk rip off. The new one isn’t any better and it reminds me of old coca cola commercials. I’ll stick with my dark brews thanks. The Carrots and the Shtick
AZ Central.com – May 6, 2008
” The Carrots started taking shape about two and a half years back when lead singer Veronica – See that? Her name’s even Ronnie — Ortu?osted something to her MySpace friends about wanting to do a girl group. Pittman’s pretty sure the only person who responded was a guy – more specifically bassist Chris Lyons (AKA Gene Defcon ) who was in another group with Pittman and invited him to join by which point Erin Budd was also singing. As Pittman recalls “We went and practiced at this punk-rock practice space and it was all sweaty and hot and there were all these really loud bands playing nearby while we’re trying to listen closely and play something that sounded like girl group music. It was at that first rehearsal that they realized they would need more than a bassist and a drummer to flesh out the singing. Enter keyboardist Jennifer Moore who’d sung backup for Voxtrot and also plays in Yellow Fever. She’s the Carrots’ “most musically capable” member Pittman reports having dropped out of music school after absorbing some theory. Rounding out the current lineup are guitar players Stephanie Chan and Lace Durant and vocalist Shelley McKann… Rounding out the current lineup are guitar players Stephanie Chan and Lace Durant and vocalist Shelley McKann. At first they started learning covers included the Ronettes’ The Best Part of Breaking Up and Remember of course. They weren’t even thinking of adding original music to the mix. “It was like ‘Let’s just do covers’” Pittman says. “Let’s be a party band. But it kind of became more serious as we went along. Not too serious though.
