” Ness’ 1998 solo debut “Cheating at Solitaire” featured both originals and covers of tracks such as “Long Black Veil” and “Don’t Think Twice (It’s Alright)”; Bruce Springsteen guested on the Ness-penned “Misery Loves Company. ” An all-covers disc “Under the Influences” followed in 1999. “I think Social D brought roots music to punk but with the solo stuff I wanted to bring everything I learned in 25 or 30 years of being in a punk band to roots music” he says. “It’s a lot harder to play a song slow and quiet than it is to play one fast; it’s harder to play a song like ‘Cheating at Solitaire’ or ‘Charmed Life’ than it is ‘Don’t Drag Me Down’ or ‘Mommy’s Little Monster. ‘ It requires concentration and relaxation. ” CM8ShowAd(“Middle”); Plus he says it offers the chance to kick up a little dust in different — and it should be said cleaner — musical environs. “I’m trying to bring the dirt back into country a little bit of an edge to a music that’s become very homogenized” he says.

99) — Walsby is Raleigh’s answer to underground cartoonist Harvey Pekar chronicling a quarter-century’s worth of punk-rock foibles in his spare time. And he must never sleep because this is the third “Manchild” volume since 2004. “Manchild 3″ even includes a bonus CD of 1987 recordings by grunge pioneers the Melvins. “Mingering Mike: The Amazing Career of an Imaginary Soul Superstar” by Dori Hadar (… 95) — Forty years ago young Mike Stevens imagined a career as a soul-music superstar for his alter ego Mingering Mike. He never made the music but he did make the packaging — scores of album covers he drew and painted with cardboard discs inside. Here is the book version. Outsider-art finds aren’t much stranger or cooler than “Mingering Mike” which will strike a chord with anyone who ever spent more time daydreaming about fame than actually chasing after it.

: Slightly Stoopid. A musical grab-bag of hip-hop reggae skateboard rock and punk San Diego’s Slightly Stoopid is noted for its jam-heavy live shows. Another venerable reggae institution Steel Pulse emerged from Birmingham England… : Jakob Dylan and the Gold Mountain Rebels. As front man of the Wallflowers in the late ’90s Dylan built his own slice of music celebrity on the backs of such hits as “One Headlight” and “6th Avenue Heartache. ” The Gold Mountain Rebels are being described as his backing band on his new solo project. Their debut album is slated for release in early June. Summerfest runs June 26 to July 6 at Maier Festival Park.
