Music Calendar Ain’t Love Good
Cleveland Free Times – May 14, 2008
" On a more serious note the veteran SoCal punk band has been hitting on all cylinders ever since its original line-up (which in addition to Doe includes singer Exene Cervenka guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. Bonebrake) reunited a few years back. "It seems to be a good time for us" Doe admits. "Everyone is playing well and having a better time… " Not sure about the Village People part but the rest of the equation makes sense. The band's latest album last year's Love Is Simple features laconic vocals and dreary rainy day melodies that would make the perfect soundtrack for anyone coming down from an acid trip. Even without any lysergic assistance this music is really beautiful and features a wide range of instrumentation that suggests the folk-derived band's impressive music abilities. Sacramento’s ‘Beer & Ballet’ gives dancers and…
Sacramento Bee – May 14, 2008
“I like to watch the creative process” Kim Reckers said. “I enjoy the variety that the dancers are able to create. “That variety ranges from the sensual pas de deux “All About My Family” danced by Kirsten Bloom and Jack Hansen (choreographed by Danielle Martinelli to music by Philip Glass) to the clever and somewhat demanding “How the Gypsy Moths Overcame the Tyrannical Rule of the Spider King” choreographed by Stefan Calka to music by the Gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello. The latter integrated Calka’s Eastern European folk-dance background with exciting modern ballet – and a surprise guest appearance by former company member Colby Damon (now calling himself R. Colby Damon he’s a freelance dancer in New York) as the Spider King. A look at the other sideChoreographers Gabriel Williams and Brian Roethlisberger both of whom joined the company in 2006 mined a more modern vein in their first attempts. Roethlisberger whose background is more in jazz and modern dance than classical ballet created an edgy music-video ambience in “Apprehension” set to music by Sarah McLachlan and Hybrid… For my first piece I thought I should do something serious prove myself or something. Then I thought my first piece probably isn’t going to be very good so I went for something kind of goofy and light. “Popular music speaks to him in a way that classical music – which he loves – doesn’t he said. But popular music “doesn’t seem to inspire classical-style dancing” he said. In addition the band he chose “doesn’t take itself too seriously – and that’s my piece. ‘What a brilliant company’Sacramentan Bill Pieper couldn’t resist commenting on the company and its most recent programs.
OFF THE WALL
San Diego Union Tribune – May 14, 2008
Personal style: Not unlike the Polyphonic Spree. San Diegoness of Sound: There are seven people in this band. And they make all sorts of arty noises that somehow turn into amazingly melodic music which is very much like the 1990s avant-jazz punk band Creedle. Also the clanky songs are Tom Waitsesque and whether Waits admits it or not he’s a local too. As big as Waits? That’s a very ambitious goal. Best songs: It’s almost impossible to choose since every song is pretty much its own entity. Overall: It’s really very difficult to pinpoint what’s going on here.
Love Scraps Album

The site claims Love is now back to the drawing board on the already named”Nobody’s Daughter” album and has started working with former Larrakin Loveguitarist Micko Larkin. Posted By: cornwinder | May 14 2008 at 05:51 PMIf you can’t write a hit working with Linda Perry something is wrong! Maybe Axel and Courtney should form Guns and Holes or Roses and Love or Dumb and Dumber.
Gore-soaked and glamorous
Detroit Metro Times – May 14, 2008
“The Gore Gore Girls 2008 are a slick high-energy long-legged rock monster but it wasn’t always so. “It’s morphed from a three-piece of limited ability” says Gore. “I was listening to a lot of surf music and Black Sabbath back then. But it’s come into its own. We have two guitar players now and that really fills out the sound and adds another dimension to it especially since my main influences include Bo Diddley the Kinks Blue Cheer the Gories Screaming Jay Hawkins Back From The Grave Vol. 1 [a 1996 Crypt Records compilation featuring such underground punk artists as the Rats the Banshees and the Novas]. I also love the Cramps. The best live show of all time hands down. I can say that because I’ve seen them close to 100 times. We did two tours with them and every night was different.
