Bledsoe: Early music from legendary group irreplaceable
Knoxville News Sentinel – May 18, 2008
The band is (in an early 1980s photo) Bob Stinson Tommy Stinson Chris Mars and Paul Westerberg. “Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash” “Replacements Stink” “Hootenanny” “Let It Be” The Replacements (Rhino)The Replacements were one of the greatest and most underappreciated bands in the history of rock music. Of course the lack of appreciation was only from the vast majority of the world that never got the chance hear the band. And in terms of greatness we’re talking about a band that took a journey from joyous free-for-all punk to some of the most sensitive and catchy power-pop and pure rock ‘n’ roll on the planet. These long-overdue reissues of the band’s first four releases dress up the original discs with stacks of enlightening bonus tracks and liner notes. On the early recordings the Minneapolis quintet sounded much like other hard-core punk bands of their time… “Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash” “Replacements Stink” “Hootenanny” “Let It Be” The Replacements (Rhino)The Replacements were one of the greatest and most underappreciated bands in the history of rock music. However singer Paul Westerberg bassist Tommy Stinson (only 13 when the band’s debut was recorded) guitarist Bob Stinson and drummer Chris Mars had a special chemistry.

Cities’ economic conditions shape local music character
Youngstown Vindicator – May 18, 2008
From these experiences local musicians ? in the spirit of Joel and Springsteen ? generate music as a reflection of their respective cities. Regardless of their musical styles or venue choices Allentown musicians maintain positive feelings about and an admiration for their now-thriving city. ?I think the local music scene is largely pro-Allentown? said Brian Follweiler vocalist and guitarist from The Saint Cloud an Allentown-based roots rock band. ?I think many bands including my own have ambitions to eventually play in different parts of the country but many people have a great respect for the place they call home. ?The local music ?soundtrack? of Allentown acknowledges the city?s richer environment but often criticizes the area for its economic certainty. In Steve Brosky?s song ?In My Neighborhood? the Allentown roots rocker expresses his opinions of the city?s condition… That?s kind of what we thrive on here? said DeCapua. ?We all accepted that Youngstown isn?t the best area in the world but we deal with it and through music we make it a better place. ?Demonstrating the tenacity of local musicians Youngstown punk rock band You Are the War That I Want expresses hometown pride in ?Fuck You Bruce Springsteen? the band?s response to ?The Boss?s? 1995 song about the city. ?We will make it ourselves. ?In its current state Youngstown inspires creativity and emotion in its musicians forging a unique local music scene said Valley24.

Or that is how they are usually cast trapped in reruns of VH1’s
Behind the Music or endless reunion tours all the sex and rebellion and talent spent like royalty checks ages ago. But what if the rocker were Patti Smith the godmother of punk once all spatter and spit and the documentary were a different project: not a nostalgia act but an exploration of real things like art and family and loss and not the romantic death found in a rock-and-roll lyric but the literal kind the kind that took Smith’’s husband away. Then you might have something like Steven Sebring’s Patti Smith: Dream of Life a collaboration between an exceptionally tenacious fashion photographer and his subject who is now 61 years old and trying to sort it all out. If you or your mom don’t know Patti Smith from Patti LaBelle you could show her this movie and she might enjoy it. “I’m really glad you say that” says Patti Smith who still talks like South Jersey where she grew up eldest daughter of a jazz-singing waitress and a factory-working father who studied the Bible Plato and UFO magazines. “I feel the same way… ”
Says Sebring giggling “She liked to clean to it. There is no sex or drugs and very little music in the film though there are lots of visits to the moody graves of long-gone poets and a scene in which Smith and Flea the bass player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers discuss bladder control. We also spend a little time with Patti’s mom who enjoyed collecting ceramic cows (she died in 2002). It all kind of works. Smith and Sebring were sitting together recently in a dungeon-like bar in Park City Utah in the morning off-hours. They look like brother and sister troll dolls.
