It’s home to the Royal Albert Hall Wembley Stadium the Astoria the Barfly the O2 Abbey Road. It’s the city which inspired the Clash the Kinks Pet Shop Boys the Jam and more recently has formed the backdrops for albums by Bloc Party Lily Allen Jamie T the Streets. It was the epicentre of the swinging ’60s of the first explosion of punk rock of ska of britpop of new rave. And while other English cities can try to steal the crown ndash; be it Manchester Liverpool or Leeds ndash; the kids always come back to London. A club night for just about any music genre
As a music nerd growing up in Adelaide I could always hear London calling. New York Detroit Seattle Nashville ndash; America can keep ‘em. ?I have been a music fan since I was nine years old? she says. ?When I discovered a graduate program in cultural studies I wanted to figure out how popular music works particularly from the perspective of gender. ?
A fan of 70s punk Coates is particularly interested in how gender roles are reproduced in popular music ? in terms of both participation and audience. ?I care less about the number of women participating and more about what they?re doing in music? she says. Some of Coates?s work has looked at the ?feminization? of particular instruments the role women play in bands and their portrayal in the media. ?Male-dominated rock culture has been taken up in shorthand and has perpetuated a lot of damage? she explains. Despite the increased involvement of women in music many questions remain unanswered.

toolsRight –>By JON PARELES Published: May 26 2008 THE TING TINGS ”We Started Nothing” (Columbia) The Ting Tings gave their debut album a refreshingly honest title: ”We Started Nothing. ” They’re a British duo — Katie White on lead vocals and guitar and Jules De Martino on drums keyboards and electronics — that loves the perky pop impulse wherever it has surfaced through the decades. The songs don’t hide echoes of predecessors from Blondie to Nancy Sinatra although the Ting Tings are clearly fondest of the 1980s when do-it-yourself punk and new wave flirted with dance music and bubble gum. The Ting Tings cheerfully bridge Toni Basil New Order and Tom Tom Club. The songs rarely use more than two chords and they’re usually built on hand clap-ready drumbeats and scrappy guitar riffs.
