Mudhoney rocks harder than ever

” Why you ask? “Well for one punk rock is infinitely more interesting” Arm says. ”Mudhoney has always been the grunge band closest spiritually to punk music (followed closely by Nirvana listen to Incesticide) channeling the primal insanity of the Stooges and Arm’s beloved New York Dolls (he recalls being slightly nonplussed after discovering their first record sounded “a bit like the Rolling Stones” and not the “freaky transsexual space rock” he judged it would be based on the album’s cover). Devotees of the band will be pleased to discover that their latest album The Lucky Ones does not skimp on the punk rock energy and in fact ramps it up a notch from their last record Under a Billion Suns.

He’s the only hope we’ve got of knowing anything about [our property] because nobody left us any instructions. We’re just finding out as we go along. Q: There’s lot of the South in your music. What drew you to the music that influenced you? A: When I started buying music I was into punk rock and some punk bands were doing old soul covers. I’d go find the original and find out it was a gospel song. I started collecting soul singles about the same time. I just went backwards instead of forwards.

(Mike McGonigal) 6 Fucked Up The Chemistry of Common Life (Matador) In some ways the restless punks in Canada’s Fucked Up still dig on hardcore convention: Frontman Pink Eyes has the girth on-stage demeanor and abdomen-damaging bellow of your classic NYHC tough guy. (Think metal boogie as much as upchuck punk. ) But from the hippie hand drums to the caustic layers of space cadet feedback no one would mistake the overwhelming wallop of The Chemistry of Common Life for an exercise in boots-and-braces retro. And for all the anti-pit aesthetes the band even tosses in some subtle hooks and vocal harmonies and other cops to semi-pop.
