John Zorn’s ‘radical Jewish music’

” Like an ld Testament warrior Zorn has conquered – musicians from jazz rock and classical; fans businesspeople; theater and film directors – and carved out a highly successful niche for his musical community the cream of which is now performing at Yoshi’s. The vast Zorn kingdom is captured on hundreds of CDs (most available on Zorn’s label Tzadik which has released more than 450 CDs by various artists since 1995) in dozens of genres from punk to jazz to symphonies to pure improvisation to movie soundtracks. But if there is a beachhead it probably would be Masada the short-form music Zorn writes that combines Jewish scales with quicksilver rnette Coleman-style improvisation. Some of the more than 500 Masada compositions Zorn has written are getting workouts from five groups at Yoshi’s starting with the Secret Chiefs 3 on Tuesday followed by the Masada String Trio (bassist Greg Cohen violinist Mark Feldman cellist Erik Friedlander conductor Zorn) Wednesday the original Masada quartet (saxophonist Zorn drummer Joey Baron trumpeter Dave Douglas Cohen) today; Bar Kokhba (guitarist Marc Ribot percussionist Cyro Baptista Baron Cohen Feldman Friedlander) Friday and Electric Masada (bassist Trevor Dunn electronics whiz Ikue Mori keyboardist Jamie Saft drummer Kenny Wollesen Zorn Baptista Baron) Sunday. The one break from Masada music occurs Saturday when the Dreamers (Zorn Baron Dunn Ribot Saft Wollesen Baptista) play Zorn’s arty paeans to ’50s kitsch. Zorn formed the Masada quartet and began writing for it in 1993 after releasing the album “Kristallnacht” his lament over the night of Nazi terror in 1938.

Their music is actually the culmination of what Canadians and university-entrenched guys have loved for some time?folk and punk music respectively. It?s also a genre that?s gaining attention these days. ?There?s a resurgence of punk folk music? he said. ?A lot of Irish Celtic folk music is based on sea shanty traditions and dirtier Irish folk comes from the bars and pubs. We just added the punk edge.

Portland Punks The Thermals Talk Dark April LP ‘Now We Can See’

They’re a distortion-spraying punk band that stitches the come-hither simplicity of rock anthems to the stickiness of pop hooks. They also write lyrics that take simple words and place them into complex puzzles. “We love the ’90s” lead singer and guitarist Hutch Harris said with a wink at a recent show in Brooklyn before launching into a Breeders cover. But don’t expect some kids simply flipping through the Alternative Nation playbook. The band broke out with 2003’s More Parts Per Million a gob-stopping collection of fuzzed-out basement tracks featuring the anti-manifesto manifesto “No Culture Icons.

one might think that the Dirty South runs deep into the band. While Kylesa is to a degree influenced by its surroundings it hesitates to refer to itself as a Southern band — so don’t expect a chopped and screwed version of Tensions anytime soon. “Savannah is a really beautiful town but at the same time it’s really dark and has this heavy oppressive feel that I think directly affects the music” Pleasants said. — Andy ’Connor HarlemFriday; 8 p. — Club 1808Saturday; 9 p.
