Peaches: Feel the cream
Chicago Sun-Times
Let’s start with making the new record: What was your goal with this one?A. I decided to make a dance record and I didn’t want to use any guitars. I’ve always been part of the dance scene sort of by default: When I started with “Teaches of Peaches” it was like mixing indie-punk music together with electro-beats which was strange and seemed to work for people. Now it’s sort of standard. But I did a lot of remixing and a lot of DJ’ing last year and my world was much more in the clubs whereas I grew up with rock and classic rock and’80s pop. In the past I’ve also been sort of a control freak basically producing myself. This time I wanted to work with other producers [Simian Mobile Disco Soulwax Digitalism and Drums of Death].

Tombs would have been alt-rock heroes in 1994—or been dismissed as just another My Bloody Valentine tribute act. Today the Brooklyn trio sounds like a post-hardcore act looking to overload your speakers. Winter Hours is a collection of short songs that are far too dense to be punk or metal. It’s just a blur of art with noise and textures and other stuff that’s usually kind of boring. Tombs uses all that to write actual songs so at least they can’t be mistaken for a Jesus Lizard tribute act. (Saturday May 23 Bottletree. )Sarah Borges & The Broken SinglesShe’s probably too young to qualify but Sarah Borges and her band sound like any ’90s Boston alt-rock act reduced to playing country-rock after their major-label subsidiary folded.

Maybe more cynical than enraged?Yeah definitely. I think there’s a healthy does of cynicism in everything that we do. Do you think within punk rock which is so often a very enraged genre you seem to be broadening the emotional palate a little bit? Is that a deliberate thing?A lot of what we do is very deliberate. And a lot of that is trying to get away from being just a punk band. It’s very limiting. We hope with this record people will think of it more of like a power-pop band. It’s been interesting because it’s punk but it doesn’t fit a Warped Tour mold which I guess could be a blessing and a curse when you’re trying to sell records.
