DIY foodies catering to la’s indie scene

Examples of musicians-turned-food fanatics aren’t hard to find. Terri Wahl who played in the L. punk band the Red Aunts in the ’90s is the owner of Eagle Rock’s Auntie Em’s Kitchen. Alex Kapranos the singer for Franz Ferdinand used to write a weekly food column for the Guardian called Soundbites (one of his best pieces was titled “Let me eat cake! I’m a rock star!”); ex-Shins drummer Jesse Sandoval is starting up his own taco truck in Portland re. called Nuevo Mexico.

storyBookmarking –> “Mike Watt’s just a big inspiration to us” he said over the phonefrom New rleans. “You can learn so much from these guys — BadBrains Fugazi Minutemen. I was really into a band like the DeadKennedys because I just loved the rawness of the music and itspolitical stance — just saying shit in such a blunt way. That might sound like an odd way for a saxophonist to speak aboutmusical influences but Skerik who stops by Berkeley’s Starry Ploughon Friday June 12 has been as influenced by punk as much as anythingelse. From the bleating free-jazz of his self-released work on 2001’sPsychochromatic and 2006’s Left for Dead in Seattle tohis whimsical additions to Les Claypool’s band on f Whales and Woe afew years ago Skerik has incorporated electronic manipulations of hisinstrument in ways that most other jazzbos would find disconcerting. It’s not a rote definition of punk that Skerik subscribes to but agenuine perception that anything is possible. The musical acrobaticsthat seem to fly from Skerik’s sax are ample proof of that.
Kyle Busch is a punk
Asheville Citizen-Times
Yeah he marches to the beat of his own drummer which is fine part of the time. But what he did on Saturday night after winning the Nationwide Race in Nashville was not right. The trophy for winning the race is a Gibson Les Paul guitar a fitting prize for winning a place known as the Music City. Thwe guitar is hand painted by longtime NASCAR artist Sam Bass. All in all it’s better than a piece of crystal. Well ol’ Kyle Busch took that guitar and banged it against the ground three time in true rock n’ roll fashion. Busch has had back luck in Nashville and he told his crew that if he ever won at the track he’d break the guitar and give them all a piece of it as a reward.

It is the open-mindedness of the Europeans that appeals to Clark and Beard. “People go from 50 Cent to Beck and that’s not a problem” Clark says by phone. “ver here if you pull up at Williams Chicken bumping [punk-rock band] Bad Brains people will say ‘Cut that off. ‘ If you’re not bumping what’s playing on the radio people will look at you strangely. “”If we go over there that’s going to help us grow as artists” says Beard. “It’s a different vibe and scene and that would help our music. “f course it’s not like DMG$ hasn’t found an audience here.

“You Are Fired (Take This Job Ah Fuck It)” is definitely my favorite song. Even though it is a minute long it is super fast and almost crusty with screams and a direct message to their previous label which basically is: Fuck off — you don’t care about music but about producing ringtones. Did I already say I love these guys? h yeah the other songs are good enough but a little but a little bit too slow for my punk guts. “This Is the First Night” and “n Independence Day” remind me of their major label albums. “The ld Guard” has got the best intro of the whole record reminiscent of their Underground Network LP. The 11th and hidden track (supposedly called “Teenage Kennedy Lobotomy”) is fast and anthemic — almost a joke but it’s actually far better than other songs on this LP. If you want a good punk record to dance to and that features some reasons to make a change this is it.

” That Saturday night encounter became the song ‘Punk Rock Show’ a single released to radio on Monday June 8th. ‘Punk Rock Show’ is part of Moyers’ self-titled debut album. An eclectic array of original songs. ‘ While these titles may seem sweet her biting lyrics reveal ‘I know that in the public eye you’re not that great’ and ‘as tears subside your wife sleeps alone in bed. ‘ Tempering her cynicism is ‘Pieces’ a tender love song about the beginning of a relationship.
