With the old-fashioned carousel and big wheel lighting up the skies the civic centre was awash with colour. Save Your Breath the latest on the Welsh pop-punk music scene started proceedings on the main stage last night with energy and talent. Then came the three-piece North Walian band The Joy Formidable proving popular with students and teenagers alike as they performed indie pop hits. Tracey Healan a regular visitor to the Big Weekend went along with her husband Steve and three-year-old daughter Hollie. “We always come along to support the festival and see what’s new each year” said Tracey from Leckwith Cardiff. “Hollie’s favourite ride has definitely been the carousel – she has had a whale of a time here and would stay all night if she could.

“Not just so we could get some interesting covers happening but we wanted to broaden the appeal for this event to maximize the turnout. Bands were invited to play songs from the original double LP the CD box sets “More Nuggets” collection or any songs by bands featured on those compilations. “The 13th Floor Elevators The Sonics and The Monks are often considered the catalyst for what became punk music” Julin says “so it makes sense that their songs were the ones that everyone wanted to cover. Several bands wanted to play ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ and ‘Strychnine’ and those songs will certainly be featured. But so many options to select from nobody was discouraged. So how many people have they had to explain Nuggets to?”Gosh. Honestly more than I expected” Hughes says.
